Scenic Adair Co., KY: Full moon over Johnson School Road

It was a bright and stormless night, and the full moon shone brightly over Johnson School Road, arguably the most picturesque in the region - at least it was before the county's poison sprays and tree manglers assaulted it. At night, the evidence of the mayhem is less evident, a welcome relief to tree huggers. Maybe the county needs to put up signs, "Please don't eat the blackberries, don't eat the poke, lest ye die." In any case, it should not take a Harvard lawyer to explain the liabilities. The spraying, by the way, is one of the reason's having less government is important: They spend going and coming. While the county is now more dependent than ever on tourism, Fiscal Court - as well as the City of Columbia - want to take uglifying shortcuts and then want to balance that by advertising "Scenic Adair County." The roadside is healing, just a bit, but it will take years for it to regain its recent splendor. - ED WAGGENER, my rant for today.
