Pokeberries: Pretty in fall, and a wondrous, Georgia writer says

2015-09-13 - Fortune Street, Columiba, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Completely volunteer, pokeberry plants provide lot of color, and look like they ought to be good for something more than pioneer ink. An extraordinary writer, Terry Johnson, has an article in Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, finds that for many creatures, including birds, who are powerful propagators for the plant. The story is worth a trip to Georgia via the internet. Here's the link: Out My Backdoor: The Wondrous Pokeberry. The article is amazingly detailed, with historic facts as well as futuristic ones, with a note on Wake Forest University's attempts to use dye from the plant to solve the energy crisis. A word of warning: If you've relished poke sallet all you life and have thrived on it, he warns against. Seems to think the plant is pizen regardless of how many times one boils it and throws away the water; but he doesn't mention anything about our notion that pork fat takes the toxins out. - CM
