Downtown People: Walking Encyclopedia of Country Music

2013-06-09 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. Stanley Perkins is a walking encyclopedia of Country Music. And the best kind of person - a Downtown Person. He's of those who walk to to morning town for morning coffee. This morning, he was remembering Paul Gilley, the Maytown, Morgan County, KY, songwriter who drowned in a farm pond at the age of 27, in 1957, and who wrote some of the late Hank Williams' most famous songs. It all verifies, but CM hasn't been able to vouch for Perkins' story about his cornbread machine, one of only two in the world. Or that the other one was owned by Abraham Lincoln. On other subjects, he seems dead on. He's Russell Guy Perkins' brother, but different, he says, cliaming. "Russell Guy is a good man. I'm a Hellcat." Maybe, but Stanley is, for sure, an authority on country music. - EW
