Birds of Kentucky: Pink-footed Goose
2022-11-17 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. A pink-footed goose is drawing crowds of birders to Shelbyville today. First spotted on Wednesday evening, the bird spent the morning on a local park golf course with a flock of Canada Geese.
The species is rare enough in North America that Sibley's Guide to Birds doesn't include a listing. Audubon says, "strays that have gone the wrong direction have been found in North America only a couple of times, in eastern Canada."

Shelbyville birder spots Pink-footed Goose
2022-11-17 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. Birders have driven as much as 160 miles to get a look at an "ABA Level 5" bird today. First spotted by local birding enthusiast Lori Ault on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, it appears to be a pink-footed goose. This species breeds in eastern Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard, and often winters in Europe. This would be the farthest east a pink-footed goose has been spotted.
