Kentucky Color: Squirrel Nest 2022-12-17 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge. Billy Joe writes,"Squirrels raise their young in a nest and seek cover from predators and weather in them. Sometimes the nest will be built in the forks of limbs like this one and sometimes in hollow places inside big limbs or the tree trunk, itself. Many folks with little experience will mistakenly identify a squirrel nest as a hawk or crow's nest. Usually a squirrel nest will be built out toward the edge of the crown while a hawk's nest will be built in bigger forks nearer the interior of the crown. Squirrels are rodents and they gnaw off the green leafy twigs and construct their nest. Hawks, crows and eagles build their nests with dead limbs, sticks and twigs since they don't have teeth.
