2023-04-19 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst.
Sharon writes, "My lilacs were a Mother's Day gift from Howard and Dawn three years ago; this is their second season to bloom, a good month earlier than could be expected in my native Vermont. The scent drifts on the lightest current of air, hauntingly nostalgic."

Scenic Kentucky: Downtown Bonnieville

2023-04-19 - Hart Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
The Bonn Theater still stands on Highway 31W in downtown Bonnieville, KY, just a few miles from I65, but it hasn't seen much use in the new century. It's a reminder to be thankful for the local interest and investment in area landmarks like the Columbian Theater and the Star.

Mary Allender named Coordinator of the Year 2009

2023-04-19 - Adair County, KY - Photo from Columbia Magazine archives by Ed Waggener 2009.
MARY ALLENDER, Adair County 911 Coordinator for the past 12 years, is the only person ever to hold the post, but she was surprised Tuesday night, April 14, 2009, when Dispatcher Jean Corbin presented her with the plaque naming her "2009 911 Coordinator of the Year, "a tribute they meant to signify "Coordinator of the Year for anywhere on the Planet Earth." Allender has been responsible for coordinating addresses, mapping the county, and continuously updating the system to allow the nation's top emergency response service to function so well.

IMPROVING EMERGENCY RESPONSE: A big aim for Allender at 911, and emergency responders, was to improve public safety by achieving 100% compliance with the program to have reflective street numbers at all residences, churches, schools, playing fields, colleges, and cemeteries. The program was initiated when she was Executive Director of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce.
