Metcalfe teachers honored by CU Excellence program

Teachers from Metcalfe County honored by the CU Excellence in Teaching program are: Nikki Jolly, Metcalfe County Elementary School; Lesley Landon, Metcalfe County Middle School; and Tonya Howard, Metcalfe County High School.

Nikki Jolly of Center, Ky. has taught special education (third and fourth grades) at Metcalfe County Elementary School since Sept. 2011. She received a Master of Art in Education from Western Kentucky University in 2012. Jolly also received a Master of Arts in Teaching from University of the Cumberlands in 2016 and a master's in business administration from Western Kentucky University in 2002. She is married to Richie Jolly, and they have three children: Dathan, Mayci and Aubree Jolly. She is a 1997 graduate of Barren County High School.

Lesley Landon of Center, KY, has taught special education, 4-H and service learning teacher at Metcalfe County Middle School since 2014. He previously taught special education at Edmonton Elementary School from 2004 to 2011 and special education at Metcalfe Intermediate Sixth Grade Center from 2011 to 2014. He received a degree in business from Transylvania University in 1996 and also received a degree in K-12 learning disabilities from Western Kentucky University in 2002. Landon is married to Johnny London, and they have two children: Tyler and Kassady. He is a 1992 graduate of Metcalfe County High School.

Tonya Howard of Columbia, Ky. has taught FACS teacher (grades 9-12) at Metcalfe County High School since 2019. She previously taught special education (6-12) at Russell County High School from 2014 to 2019. She received a degree in elementary education from Western Kentucky University in 2007. Howard also received a special education LBD from Campbellsville University in 2012 and a family and consumer science certificate from Murray State University. She is married to Adam Howard, and they have two children: Kaitlynn and Elijah. She is a 2002 graduate of Adair County High School.

Looking back to 2005 - LEAD Adair

These Adair Countians attended the Berea College Brushy Fork Leadership Conference in 2005 and worked on a team project with a goal to strengthen the skills of local leaders committed to working together for the public good. LEAD Adair was the result, a program started to train future leaders. HSW in historic Bank of Jamestown, built in 1904

Attorney Derrick Helm knew he would base his practice at home even before he ever left for college. As a student at Russell County High School he felt a passion for a career that would help local families. It made sense to him to locate at home and restore a historic building for his offices. The firm Helm Shearer Wilson is located at 300 Monument Square in Jamestown, KY in what was the original Bank of Jamestown, built in 1904.

Hummingbird Moth lunching at Butterfly Bush

This is the second time in 2023 that readers have shared the Hummingbird Moth. These photos are taken from a video by photographer Jackie Montgomery. In the picture at left more of the body is visible. Wings in both pictures are flapping so fast they are almost invisible. The photo at right is front facing, showing the Hummingbird Moth looking as if it is wearing sunglasses, smiling.

2023 Derby Rose Gala

The 2023 Derby Rose Gala, held earlier this year, raised $40,000 toward scholarship money for Campbellsville University students. Since its inception in 2009, the Gala has raised more than $500,000.

Tourism helps sponsor upcoming Outdoorsman's Expo

Adair County Tourism Commission Director Paige Nickel presented a giant check representing the donation from Tourism in the amount of $2,750 to the South Central KY Outdoorsman's Expo. The leader of the organization, Chris Burton, said there are still booths available for any who would like to be part of the growing event coming on July 28 and 29, 2023 at Adair County High School.
