Watching the Space Station

2012-11-29 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. Graham and Evan Waggener got out before school this morning to watch the International Space Station fly over Shelbyville. The ISS appeared heading south at around 7:10am Eastern Time this morning, and the boys knew to be looking because of the nifty automatic emails that Nasa.gov sends when the station will be overhead at a good viewing hour. You can sign up for the automatic emails at Spot The Station on Nasa's web site.

Christmas in Columbia 2012: Tradition continues

2012-11-28 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Ye Old Courthouse Christmas Shoppe sign is up and much of the decorating is done for Christmas in Columbia Downtown. This year, as last, events will be offered around the county, with the two central locations: Downtown and the Holloway Wellness Center at Lindsey Wilson College. The Old Courthouse Christmas Shoppe is on Saturday, as is the "new tradition" Community Christmas Chorus, and the Parade under the Lights. The Holloway Christmas in Columbia will include indoor shops and exhibits and Santa and Mrs. Santa's arrival by Fire Truck. Then the parade under the lights will be back in downtown on Saturday evening. For the complete Christmas in Columbia schedule for Saturday and Sunday, see Christmas in Columbia 2012 schedule

LUSUS NATURAE: Face in a tree

2012-11-28 - The Flatwoods, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A Fabulous old Beech Tree along KY 61 S, the new Burkesville Road through The Flatwoods, has become a notable marking place for travellers, reminding them of what they used to pass this along what is now Wheeler Hill Road. The tree is on back of the Santa Fee Baptist Church campus and - for those with the proper interpretative powers, overlaying order where there may be no order in the chaos of nature - holds the face of a one-eyed, flat faced bear. If you don't see a Flat Faced One Year Bear near the center, top of the frame, just don't tell anybody - that way nobody will think you are crazy. - CM

Koi offer constant entertainment on the Donald White farm

2012-11-28 - Ozark, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
One of the prettiest secret spots in Adair County is the calming creation of Lois White, a recirculating waterfalls, with drystone masonry retaining walls, and gorgeous koi of all sizes and colors. Lois and husband Donald White live on his family's ancestral lands and have, over the years, transformed a place of great beauty into one which is a marking place for travellers halfway between Columbia and Russell Springs, KY. For more on the colorful domesticated carp, see Koi at Wikipedia.

Venue, or wake, at Tuesday night gathering on Greensburg Street

2012-11-28 - 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Birds of Kentucky: Don't know what, exactly, to call it. Some would call it a Venue of Vultures, some a Wake of Vultures. Nuances may depend on what the two dozen or so are up to. If birds of a feather do flock together, they were assuredly turkey vultures, not the seemingly more prevalent and more than a little black vulture dudes. These have distinctive turkey vulture red heads. - EW
