Downtown People: Mike the Breadman gets Square underway

2012-12-07 - Fountain Plaza, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Mike the Breadman was leaving the Square this morning after getting Moore's Lunch & Poolroom underway with fresh buns and light bread and getting tons of advice from one of Moore's breakfast clubs, Sara Lee Bread comes from London, from the old Kern's Bakery. It's good bread, and really good with a dollar sausage, mustard, and light bread sandwich at Moore's. Cheaper too. The same sausage with homemade biscuits at Moore is a delicacy - and priced as such. And, speaking of bread, Joe L. Barbee said he'd seen Bunny Bread in his travels somewhere, lately. Photo taken in the early morning, Friday, December 7, 2012, as downtown was coming to life - EW

Western Auto - Remember when Christmas was spelled this way

2012-12-07 - South Central Kentucky - Photo by Randall Smith. A lot of South Central Kentuckians remember when Western Auto, at this time of the year, was as synonymous with Christmas as Ben Franklin, Firestone, Munson's, and the Louisville Store were back then or Walmart is today. It was the place where Santa bought those shiny Western Flyer bicycles. The sign above adorned a building now undergoing adaptive reuse, (which I'll post later on CM) with information about this sign and the building. In the meantime, I'm wondering 1) how many of the towns around us had Western Auto's - you'd think they would be as essential as courthouses, Baptist Churches, and Dairy Queens to have a proper town - or 2) If anyone remembers the proprietors/owners, of the stores in order of ownership, in each of the proper towns which had the stores. Let me know, or send the information to CM. The photograher's shadow is that of my brother, Randall Smith. - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, 99.9 FM, the Big Dawg, Campbellsville, KY

ACT Scrimmage in progress at Adair County High School

2012-12-06 - ACHS, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia KY - Photo By Travis Gay, ACHS photo. Adair County High School juniors are taking part in an ACT scrimmage today, Thursday, November 6, 2012. All 11th grade students assumed their seat in the gymnasium in a highly organized, timed practice. While ACT scores rose last year at ACHS, there is still ample room for improvement. According to Superintendent Alan Reed, students must have high ACT scores to be eligible for scholarships and to gain the most sought after spots in universities and technology programs. Assistant Principal, Travis Gay, who took the photo, says the event was orchestrated by the ACHS leadership team and counselors Leslie Melton and Ann Young (at podium.
