Buffalo Springs Cemetery: Steles and unusual statuary

2013-01-06 - Buffalo Springs Cemetery, Stanford, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Steles and unusal statuary mark the landscape in Buffalo Springs Cemetery,
a carefully maintained cemetery as old as the nation just west of and overlooking Stanford, Lincoln County, KY. These steles, because of their shape, and pyramidal tops, are also obelisks.

Epicurean Kentuckian: The Vindication of Johnny Vaughn

2013-01-06 - 202 W. Main Street, Stanford, KY. - Photo by Ed Waggener. It got off to a rocky start, but Linda and I finally vindicated the restaurant review authority of Johnny Vaughn, the celebrated Adair County raconteur, game food expert, and charter member of the Blue Ribbon Bear Board. To celebrate the victory over skepticism, we liberated one of the blueberry/strawberry cheese danishes from this cake stand prison, to take home and enjoy as a last supper Saturday night in Columbia, along with quite excellent take away coffee. Both made it almost 10 of the miles to Danville. Awesome. At The Bluebird - Southern Breakfast and Lunch, 202 W. Main, Stanford, KY. Phone 606-365-1010. - ED WAGGENER. If you go: The Blue Bird is about 1 hour and 15 minutes away by the proper, historic route up KY 206, 54.7 miles from 212 Public Square, Columbia, KY. It's closed Sundays. Open 7amET/4pmCT, Mondays through Saturdays.

Stanford, KY: Could 1776 residents have envisioned this

2013-01-06 - Buffalo Springs Cemetery, Stanford, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. One has to wonder seeing this compressed view of the jewel of the Bluegrass if the organizers of Buffalo Springs Cemetery could have foreseen, in 1776, the town of today, and one has to go away believing that yes, they did, and were willing to let it reach a goal of near perfection even if it took over 236 years to reach what it is today. Timeless elements, like the Lincoln County courthouse, the large tower in the mid-left, and the steeple of the Presbyterian Church, abound. Perhaps it is the lay of the land, situated at the juncture of Central Kentucky Bluegrass and the blue foothills, top of frame, of the Eastern Kentucky Mountains, which give it a special dynamic. Time was, Stanford was more familiar to Adair Countians. Time was, highway 206 was Stanford Road. But changing highway travel routes for Columbians mostly bypass Lincoln County. And that's a shame. For anyone wanting to discover it, Stanford and Lincoln County are close enough to be one of the best things about Columbia/Adair County.
