Life Downtown: Benches make visits more comfortable

2013-01-09 - 200 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. This very comfortable bench, at 200 Public Square is the latest to be added to the Downtown scene. It was built by Columbia's own Fabco Manufacturing Co. Benches have been incrementally added to the original ones at the Historic Adair County Courthouse. Wid Harris started the trend toward businesses putting benches in front of buildings, with his well used log bench in front of Town Barber shop. Now a number of benches, in eclectic styles, are available for folks to sit a spell. One, the Orphan Bench in front of the First National Bank, recently disappeared, but others have been refurbished and tightened. In addition to more comfortable resting places, more water fountains, canopies and balconies, additional landscaping, added bike racks and better pedestrian safety have been advocated by Downtown's advocates.
