Epicurean Kentuckian: Hashbrown Soup

2013-01-12 - 730 Southfork Road, Liberty, Casey County, KY. - Photo CM photo. A classic Oregonian/Kentuckian Hashbrown soup is served from the sophisticated kitchen at the the Wagon Trail Restaurant, South Fork Road, Casey County, KY. Hearty and filling, al fresco, on a summery winter day, January 11, 2013. It's called Hashbrown Soup, Amy Sizemore said. It's served with buttered garlic bread, with chopped onion garnish. Mrs. Sizemore's family, the Doyles, are a coal mining family from Harlan County. Mr. Sizemore, her husband doesn't claim any Kentucky background, though the name shouts it. Rating: The Best Oregonian-Kentuckian Hashbrown Soup in the region. - EK

Birds of Kentucky: Turkey Vultures sunning

2013-01-11 - Breeding, Adair County, KY - Photo by Kelli Claypool.
Fascinating Creatures - Yesterday, Wednesday, January 9, 2013, when I walked outside, I felt like I was stepping into a Hitchcock film as there were at least 20 turkey vultures lined up on our fence posts and on the ground. According to Buzzle.com, "They are often observed sitting on the trees, with their wings spread, which is referred to as 'horaltic pose'. They do it to warm their body and dry their wings. However, it also helps them to destroy the bacteria, by baking them off in the hot sun." These are fascinating creatures! Kelli Claypool. Photo taken Wednesday, January 9, 2012 at Breeding, KY.
