Epicurean Kentuckian: Gentle Green Soup
2013-01-19 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Gentle Green Soup is a minor twist on avocado soup. It's simple, quick, and and tasty. This serving for one was made with one avocado, sauteed and mashed with a fork, vegetable broth to desired thickness, a dollop or two of half and half, salt to taste, and olive oil The topping is diced cucumber, cilantro, carrot, and red sweet pepper. Most of the topping was for color, which the cucumber doesn't have, but the cucumber is the perfect taste complement. The edible spoon was pretty okay. - EW

Daffy-dils have gone blooming bonkers? January 19, 2013
2013-01-19 - E. Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Maybe they're not so crazy as it seems but they're out of bed awfully early this year - as early as we've seen them here. The daffodils probably won't bloom before the deep freeze just ahead. Not sure when the earliest record date is for daffodils to bloom but this would seem to be nearly it. Crocus usually beat daffodils by several days, but we've only seen them in the budding, not blooming stage this year on CM.

Big Al visits Lynchburg, TN: Ms. Janice Johnson
2013-01-19 - 197 Main Street, Lynchburg, TN - Photo by Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker. Ms. Janice Johnson greeted Big Al when he made a delivery of a pallet of goodies to her store. He carried in many boxes, filled with preserves, chow chow, and relishes and other delectables. Miss Johnson helped Big Al pick out some excellent gifts to take back to his current home in Nashville.

Big Al visits Lynchburg, TN: Dry County Still General Store
2013-01-19 - 197 Main Street, Lynchburg, TN - Photo by Big Al Owens. Finally, the perpitetic Big Al Owens discovers Lynchburg, Tennessee is as disgustingly dry as his ancestral home in Vester, Adair County, KY, even though it is where the world's most famous whiskey is made. They do sell Tennessee Whiskey Fudge at the Dry County Still General Store, though it's probably not nearly the buzz builder of your favorite aunt's bourbon balls. If you go: Big Al measured it. Hanging a left in Glasgow, it's 176.71 miles from here to there.

Scenic Lincoln Co., KY: Marker at Harvey Helm Library
2013-01-19 - 315 W. Main Street, Stanford, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. This historical marker on Main Street in Stanford, KY marks the location of the Harvey Helm Historic Library (Landmark Hunter/Samuel and Mary Logan Briggs House
Also known as: Harvey Helm Historic Library & Museum). It is historic in so many ways, as the marker depicts. But on a personal note, it is much more. It's where the late Pete Walker and the late Elsie Faulkner, two never to be forgotten personalities, started the Lincoln County Post, a weekly newspaper. They, together with early editor John Chowning, developed into one of Kentucky's finest. My family remembers it as an office with overnight quarters, when the paper's office was here, when it was printed on the huge Harris press on Jamestown Street in Columbia, KY. More than a few Adair Countians will remember composing its pages in the plant at 107 N. Reed Street, and typesetters will remember stopping to laugh out loud at stories written by Elsie Faulkner, or Pete, or occasional writer Keith Marcum. The house was where our oldest son plunked hedge apples in the fall in St. Asaph's Creek, which flows through the backyard, where every morning was three block walk to breakfast at Begley Drug Store, no longer in business or at Coleman's Drug Store, still going stronger than ever in 2013, where, in both places more news was exchanged each morning than we could glean in a week for the Lincoln County Post or the competing Interior Journal - the IJ - had in two weeks time. It was a place where all three necessary daily papers: The Danville Advocate, the Lexington Herald and the Courier-Journal were on Main Street before the coffee was hot. The restaurant scene except for Coleman's has changed, and the newspapers are no longer the big deal they were then. Then, it was a taste of Norman Rockwell America. Still, today, as much as any place, it continues to be just that.
