Bella, Red Heeler, is missing from Knifley Road area

2013-02-11 - Knifley Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Brandy Hargrove.
This is Bella. She is a red heeler and she has been missing since Friday, February 8, 2013. We live 3.5 miles out KY 551/Knifley Road on Piercy Road. She is about 7 months old. If any one sees her, please give me a call at 270-634-3467. My girls really miss her already and she was last seen with a blue heeler that had a orange collar on. Bella does not have a collar. - Brandy Hargrove

Birds of Kentucky: To Hold a Mockingbird

2013-02-10 - Cane Valley, KY - Photo by Jamie Hitch.
Today, just one day after sighting a beautiful Red Tailed Hawk at the Joey Breeding place in Cane Valley, Brandon Hitch, above went out to his pickup truck to find this Mockingbird trapped inside. He took time to have this photograph made then released the bird, which flew away, maybe all the better for the experience. Paired Photo. See also: Birds of Kentucky: Red Tailed Hawk

Historian Mike Watson

2013-02-10 - 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Historian Mike Watson, above at the Adair County Public Library prior to the 2011 Silent City production in which he portrayed Columbia attorney Parker C. Hardin, is an Adair County native who has written several histories of Adair County. He now teaches history in Mercer County, KY, and maintains a home in Columbia, where, one day, he hopes to be Adair County's first Cemetery Commissioner, the only constitutional office Adair County does not currently fill. He's the author of the fascinating story published today, February 10, 2013, about the cholera outbreak of 1873. The photo was taken in the Genealogy Room at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, which serves, practically, as the writer's office when he is in Columbia - as he often is.

Three headstones suggest bigger story

2013-02-10 - 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The three side by side by side headstones - actually a single stone carved to give the appearance of three - with identical dates of death suggest a tragedy. The stones mark the final resting place of Fannie E Winfrey, I.C. Winfrey, and Sammie Winfrey. They were the victims of a tragic epidemic which struck the village of Columbia in 1873, when an employee of the Winfrey Hotel contracted cholera while visiting the Marion County Fair in Lebanon, KY, and unwittingly spread the disease on his return to Columbia.

A triple headstone marks Winfrey family loss to cholera

2013-02-10 - Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The identical date on three headstones
just to the right of the obelisk in the photo above, in the Winfrey family plot in the old section of the Columbia Cemetery sugggest a larger story - and there is one, told today, Sunday, February 10, 2013, by Mike Watson, Adair County Historian, in a riveting story about an outbreak of cholera in Columbia. The Winfrey plot is easy to find so long as the famous Blue Barn, background, remains. - EW
