Epicurean Kentuckian abroad: What they eat in Nashville

2013-03-26 - Nashville, TN - Photo By Big Al Owens. Big Al Owens, a full time food critic and in real life an Adair Countian temporarily abiding in Nashville, TN sends this example of how folks eat in Nashville, Columbia's counterpart in the Volunteer State: "Chicken stir fry with steamed vegetables on a bed of steamed rice with garlic bread and a glass of milk," he captions this dish for a growing boy. Didn't say whether it came from his kitchen or was a high dollar meal at a fancy restaurant, just that it was exceptionally good.

Travel with Big Al Owens bragging about Nashville S.W.A.T. truck

2013-03-26 - Nashville, TN - Photo by Innocent Bystander.
Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker & Travel Writer is definitely out as a Nashville Predators fan. At a recent game he posed with the Nashville Metro Police S.W.A.T. truck - to show one of the few of the same differences between Davidson County, TN, Big Al's current hometown, and Adair County, KY, his Real Hometown. They have a river, we've got a river. They've got a college, we've got a college. They're known for printing, we're known for printing. Same difference. We just don't have a S.W.A.T. truck - Yet. But they'll never be the Number 1 county in Tennessee, and we are.

Larry Smith: Floodwaters, Greensburg, KY, ca 1960

2013-03-25 - Greensburg, KY - Photo from collection of Larry Smith.
The Rest is History:
Larry Smith, Operations Manager, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM writes: "This photo was taken in 1960 before we had flood control...The old barn with the Double Cola sign is where the Greensburg Dairy Queen is now located....As you can see this is one reason the Green River Dam was built. Residents down the Green River would be flooded every time we had rain for more than 24 hours. Another fact was that the Corp of Engineers want to build the entire lake in Green County starting at Whitewood on the Taylor County line with thousands of acres of water extending to the American Legion Park but conservatives that have controlled the county with an iron fist fought the proposal. while Taylor and Adair Counties wanted the lake and got it and the rest is history..."
