New mowing tractor almost ready for Adair Co., KY roadways
2013-03-29 - 1122 Campbellsville Rd, Columbia, KY 42728 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Terry Goodin worked with Adair County Magistrate Joe Rogers (6) and representatives of the Adair County Road Department to match this in-stock New Holland T-50-50 to mowing needs. The tractor comes with better specs for mowing, than most other tractors, was priced several thousand dollars below expected cost, is in stock, and, because it is on State Contract, the purchase did not need to be bid. It will be accessorized with safety features and should be ready for mowing duty in days. Goodin is sales manager at Hobdy, Dye and Read, the New Holland and Kubota farm equpment dealer, at 1122 Campbellsville Road, Columbia, KY. A vote to buy the tractor was taken March 28, 2013, in an 8:30amCT Special Adair County Fiscal Court Meeting, with all Magistrates present.

Edgar Holmes' special spot on the Square
2013-03-28 - 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. World War II Veteran Edgar Holmes had a special spot on the Square in front the Adair Annex. Today he was remembering his first job Downtown, when he worked for the late Vernon Yarberry at a small gas station Mr. Yarberry had on the back of the lot the Annex now occupies, at the corner of Greensburg Street and Monroe Street. "I made a dollar a day," he remembers. "That was good money in those days," he said. At lunch time, he'd go to the W.I. Ingram grocery store, where he'd buy a nickel's worth of cheese. "You paid a nickel for the cheese, and you got to eat as many soda crackers as you wanted, from a barrel." Cokes, or "dopes" were a nickel, he said. "But I liked to buy a bottle of milk . . . I believe it was a nickel or dime. It had a paper top you pulled off, after you shook the milk up." It was in the days before homogenized milk, he said." And the cream separated to the top. It was quick a meal for a dime or 15 cents, he remembers, though it may have been a bit higher percentage of a day's pay than even a high dollar meal at meal at Moore's Lunch or Tap's Diner might be today. And the cedar item: Mr. Holmes makes those, crafting them in his car while he's watching the passing show Downtown. But he asks that no one tell the police. "I believe they made it illegal to whittle downtown a few years ago." Didn't have time to check that out, but just in case, don't tell the Whittle Patrol. - EW

Gary Crawford congratulated by Supt. Reed
2013-03-28 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Gary Crawford of Tap's Diner left was congratulated by Adair County Superintendent Alan W. Reed after the superintendent learned of Crawford's achievement - he has successfully completed the battery of GED tests to earn a high school diploma. He did it on the first try, and credits LeAnna Bennett and the Somerset Community College Adult Learning Center at Lindsey Wilson College. for helping him with the areas for which he needed a little extra tutoring before attempting the exams. The great thing, he said, was that they could assess his chance in each area, and let him go at his own speed. Though the GED program was once a part of the Adair County School District's responsibility, Superintendent Reed said he could not be happier than he is with the program under SCC's management and with Lindsey Wilson College for hosting the Adult Learning Center. Crawford said that it was a great experience, one he'd hope other Adair Countians would attempt. Clicking ReadMore accesses a followup stroy by LeAnna Bennett
