Birds of Kentucky: The Eagle has landed at Sano, KY
2013-03-30 - Sano Road, Adair Co., KY - Photo By Katie McGaha. A Beautiful American Bald Eagle is causing a big stir on Ky 1729 - Sano Road in Adair County - near Free Union Separate Baptist Church. Cathy Green wrote, "My husband saw this Bald Eagle in Sano this morning! It was eying a 'road killed' possum!" The McGaha Twins - Katie and Kellie, they are freshmen at Adair County High School this year - took photos of it with a Nikon Coolpix and are sharing some with CM readers, and plan to take more. At 10:24amCT, Cathy Green said that the eagle was still hunting in the area. "We've had a lot of company since word got out that it's here," she said. Today was the first time the eagle had been seen in Sano, as far as she knew.

Downtown Columbia: A fire somewhere
2013-03-30 - Public Square, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Just an early spring photo I liked. The tilt of the Adair County Fire Department is a clue they were on a mission - don't remember which fire. Sirens were blasting and volunteers were buzzing through the square to get to the fire station and join this unit. It's one of only a very few situations where traffic ought to be allowed to go over 15 mph around the Square, in my opinion. - EW

Changing Downtown Columbia: Name change coming
2013-03-30 - 302 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A sign in the window at C & F Discount announces a name change to "Monkey Business." The business is owned by Stephanie and Craig Feese. It borders the busy Well Walk off the Square. Across the walk, Columbia's newest realty company, Heavenly Hollow, with new owner Robbie Selch, occupies the building old timers remember as Lany Bray & Company. Prior to Selch buying that company, it occupied quarters in downtown Roley/Casey Creek, KY. (By the way, with there no longer being a US Post Office imposing the bureaucratic "Casey Creek" name, can we go back to "Roley"? Great Oaks Ministries uses that name for the community. Should we all?)

More Federal cuts mean severe local belt tightening
2013-03-29 - Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. Adair County School Board Chairman Floyd Burton commented on the Kentucky Department and Kentucky School Board Association recommendations to keep budgets on the conservative side seriously. "It looks like sequestration is going to happen," he said, "When it doesn't seem like we could do it, it looks like we'll be tightening our belts yet again. Where all the money will come from to give a quality education to every student in our system - that's the million dollar question. With the cuts we're seeing, a local answer is tough. Even doubling the property tax wouldn't make up for what has been lost." Mr. Burton represents Adair County School District Division 4.

2013-03-29 - Berea College, Berea, KY - Photo by David Rosenbaum. David Rosenbaum writes: I'm attaching a photo of a sign on the Berea College Campus honoring my uncle Harold D. Rosenbaum as a Distinguished Alumnus. There will still be folks in Adair that remember Uncle Harold. He was a proud graduate of Yellow Hammer and Glensfork High School. He was always proud of his Adair County roots and had many interesting stories of his boyhood at Fairplay. - David Rosenbaum
