Agriculture getting greener: Solar Cattle Feeders

2013-04-15 - 1011 Campbellsville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Few can help notice this equipment at Day & Day, a Solar Feeder. This model is seen being used for cattle on the company's website. The specs say it is designed to feed up to 20 cattle. It uses battery for storage for the solar power. It was Sunday and the store was closed when the photo was taken. Don't know if anyone has one in use in Adair County yet. Progressive Adair County farmer Mike Loy has six Solar Feeders in use - not sure of the size. An advantage is that cows snack feed instead of binge feed, according to Julie Combs at Day & Day. "That's much healthier for the animals," she said.

Bridges of Adair Co., KY: Barnett's Creek Style

2013-04-15 - Barnetts Creek Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
This sturdy, attractive bridge
goes to private property across from Barnett's Creek United Methodist Church. It's constructed of steel railings and utilizes what looks to be railroad ties for the floor. It's one of several such bridges at entrances to homes and farms from about 1.5 miles of Barnett's Creek Road in the Pellyton Community of Adair County. This photo was taken Saturday, April 13, 2013. One note: The covered bridge in the community no longer stands. Any comments, clarifications or corrections welcome. -EW

Mystery picture: What's this? (Contest over at 6:18amCT)

2013-04-15 - Adair County, KY - Photo Pen. Contest Over: Angie Scott correctly answered the question: It's the ticket box at the Columbian Theatre in Downtown Columbia

It looks like something from Joe Moore's museum collection. But it isn't. If you've never used the device, you're welcome to guess what it is, and tell the important role it's played in Adair County for many decades. Yes, we'll make a $25 contribution to Chromebooks for Casey to the first person (only one prize), (which we hope the winner will match) who fully describes the device, where it was used and writes the best paragraph describing its role. Send using the Comments button with this photo. (Don't want to wait to help Chromebooks for Casey? Want to Donate tonight? Click to: Chromebooks for Casey. Whatever you give - from $10 to enough to buy 10 laptops for Adair County School children - any amount will be appreciated. - CM)
