Collins Buick advertisement, 2nd in Aug. 1955 News

2013-04-21 - Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from collection of Mike Watson.
Another Collins Buick Ad: The ad, for a Buick 4-door hardtop - a sedan without full door frame center posts - implemented the highly successful long copy advertisements of the 20th century, which worked on the premise that a lot of text help sell - a principle still adhered to in successful direct marketing - Buicks in Columbia also had the a competitive advantage in the Collins family - natural marketing men who continued to add techniques as the business grew in Columbia, and later, after the family left for their Buick franchise in Hopkinsville, KY, and the Buick franchise here was taken over by the T.P. "Cotton" Phelps auto empire.

Columbia Motor Co had a new king

2013-04-21 - Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from collection of Mike Watson. Automobile advertisements from Adair County News, same issue as other photos with this story, August 1955. This one was from the Columbia Motor Company when it occupied what is now the office of Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home at 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - actually just a small portion of he SPM building, between the north end of the building and the Adair County Regional Jail. The business next moved to Campbellsville and Merchant Street, occupying what is now the Columbia Municipal Parking Lot there.

Collins Buick advertisement 1955

2013-04-21 - Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Mike Watson.
Another automobile advertisements from Adair County News, August 1955, this one for Collins Buick. Note that none of the specials carried prices, and Columbia had four digit phone numbers, which today are coming back (on campuses in the area with almost twice the number of people as were in Columbia in 1955. The Adair County School District will have an internal system with 4 digit numbers within a year.) Collins Buick became one of the Commonwealth's best known dealerships in its time.

Old Adair Co. News ad: Service Oldsmobile, Columbia, KY

2013-04-21 - Camppbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo From collection of Mike Watson . A buyer could get a prestige car, with a General Motors Oldsmobile badged $2,339.62 in 1955, about the same as the cost of the world's cheapest new car, a Tata Nano today. Does anybody remember this dealership? And does anybody remember how the General Motors brands ranked in luxury? Was it Chevrolet, then a step up to Pontiac, another to Oldsmobile, then another to Buick, with Cadillac the ultimate American car of the day?

History: 45 year old relic of the Sparksville Raiders

2013-04-21 - Adair Co., KY - Photo from collection of Mike Watson.
There are a few still around who will remember this relic: A Sparksville Raiders sweatshirt from about 1968, complete with Viking Raider and sword. These were a fund raiser at the time. Mine has seen better days, is now short sleeved and appears to have been used to soak up some liquid that would never quite wash out! Ah, those were the days!!

Chapeau complications trump early birthday celebrations

2013-04-21 - Photo by Tom Waggener. Tillie uh-ohed when her party hat behaved insubordinately at a kickoff celebration for her second birthday. The hat was more important, at the time than the chocolate ice cream. The tradition of early and prolonged birthday celebrations may come to her from several sources - for sure it is in the DNA from her Leftwich/Marcum/Turner lineage from Metcalfe and Adair Counties. Her repertoire now includes the alphabet song, and a beautiful styling of "Twinkle, twinkle, Little Star." - Granddad, Ed Waggener
