Bridges of Green Co., KY: Columbia Road, in old days
2013-05-03 - S Main/Columbia Road, Greensburg, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The WAVE, FM 92.7 radio. This was before the Green River Dam was built and river levels were usually much higher in those days. The river was, often a lake. I don't have an exact date on the photo, but the cars appear to be late 40's. The car going up the ramp on the bridge is leaving S Main, town side, headed south toward Columbia or Edmonton. The old Champion Bridge allowed alternating one way traffic. Barely visible is the long line of cars from the Columbia-Edmonton side waiting to come across. (Hope someone will tell us how traffic knew when to start. Was there a light? Did they honk horns?). The Greensburg side of section of the bridge fell in the late 1940s, necessitating a new concrete bridge which is still in service today - may with a little less romance and awe - but one which is secure, reliable, and one which carries many times more traffic than then. Writes Larry Smith. Comments welcome Photo from the vast collection of Larry Smith, Morning news anchor, The WAVE, 92.7 FM and Operations Manager of The Big Dawg, FM 99.9 FM.
