History Quiz: Anybody know the year?
2013-05-10 - Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of Mike Watson. A clue: It was likely before entertainer Roger Drake made Renfro Valley famous: Mike Watson discovered this beautiful old poster in his collection. The poster gives the location only as "The High School," so it may have been from the days when we called an operator at Southern Bell on Reed Street and told her simply, "I need Dr. Flowers, quick," and that was all one needed to get medical help, pronto. None of any of this "192-A" stuff. It may in the era of Columbia High School, it may be on into the Adair County High School era. The elementary information Mr. Watson wants, is the year, and with it, the high school. Use the Comments button to respond.

Arched entrance Charles de Gaulle would have loved
2013-05-10 - Lindsey Wilson Sports Park, 828 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. One can almost visualize the procession of bands, the cavalcades and dignitary convoys, the parades for heroes making passage through the dramatic new entrance to Lindsey Wilson Sports Park. For sure it will help make for better theater, and leave a memorable vision in the minds of those who pass through and and leave under it. Yesterday, Thursday, May 9, 2013, Lindsey Wilson Plant Operations Manager Mike Newton, white shirt, Jimmy Bottoms, blue and Danny Brockman walking up hill, red shirt were putting the finishing touches on one of the last major phases of construction for the Sports Park, an unmatched jewel which has become, the "New Face of Columbia," not only from the Louie B. Nunn Parkway, but now, on busy Russell Road as well. By last night, the globe lights were in place. Yet to be added: A sign between the arch standard on the right and the distinctive globe lamp, and the crowning touch, a Raider Bob on the entrance face.

Birds of Kentucky: Problems of getting launched in this world
2013-05-10 - Milltown Church Road, Columbia, KY. - Photo by Alexandra Morgan. My mom and sister found a baby bird and yelled for me to come and take photos of it. But as we took photos we realized we didn't know what to do with it because we didn't know where the mom was. We made sure it wasn't hurt and his wings were okay. The bird could move them up and down, so we assumed it fell when trying to learn to fly. We just placed it up in a tiny tree about 3 feet high and left it alone. the mother may have come back for it. We can't find it anywhere so maybe the mom rescued it. - Alexandra Morgan Photo taken Wednesday, May 8, 2013.

Grand New Entrance for Lindsey Wilson Sports Park
2013-05-09 - Lindsey Wilson Sports Park, 828 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The Final Touches are going on the new arched entrance to the Lindsey Wilson Sports Park. A big Raider Bob will be attached to the center plate of the arch, which is 19 feet tall at the center, 15 feet tall at the posts. The arch is 39 feet wide. It will have very soft light strips around the edges of the framework. Globe lamps were installed today on the entrance posts. To the left of the arch there will be a large sign welcoming sports fans to the park, which includes Blue Raider Stadium, Egnew Park for baseball, and Lindsey Wilson Park for softball. Construction of the project was completed by Mike Newton and the Lindsey Wilson Plant Operation Department at a cost of approximately one-third what it would have been had the project been opened for bidding. The arch was built by AJ - Anthony Janes and his Fabco company. Mark Jones and Gerald Lucas of Lindsey Wilson were the masons. Certified electricians Jimmy Bottoms and Danny Brockman of Plant Operations installed the lighting.
