Darlene Campbell walks on sharp glass shards

2013-05-19 - Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Versatile Darlene Campbell walks across shards of glass in her own animated, choreographed style, hinting at flight of a sprite. The demonstration, far from magic, illustrates the application of proven physics. The glass makes indentions, but doesn't cut into the soles of the feet. The most perilous time is the move off the glass, when tiny pieces of glass can be stuck to the soles and cut into the soles when the foot hits a solid surface, such as the sidewalk. It's not a trick to try at home without learning the techniques from veteran glass walkers. Campbell is an instructor with a local self-defense team, the Green River Bagauzhang, which occasionally teaches the advanced exhibits to students who qualify. The Green River Bagauzhang was a star attraction - right up there with the marquee FM2 headliners, ripe strawberries from Fairplay and Bull Road Road.

Close, but head and neck remained intact

2013-05-19 - Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Instructors for the Green River Bagauzhang Josh Tucker, swinging machete, and Sam Avery, demonstrated a feat of control for festival goers at Saturday's Farmer's Market on the Square. Usually, the passive player holds a cucumber next to his/her neck, but the day's demonstrations expended the supply of cukes, so a watermelon was used instead. It was a crowd pleasing demonstration. The razor sharp edge actually touches the skin, but does not penetrate.
