Progress Downtown: A new stripe on roadway

2013-05-31 - Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Kentucky State Highway Department Workers from Somserset were in town last night, Thursday, May 30, 2013, to stripe the Square from the entrance on Burkesville Street to the Jamestown Street exit. The striping is to keep traffic in the correct lane. The outside lane has always been intended for those continuing the path of KY 80, the inside one for traffic planning to exit on Campbellsville Street or Greensburg. However, without the stripes some were opting for the shortest queue, usually the outside lane, then cutting off other traffic to be able to get Campbellsville or Greensburg Street faster, but now, the lines define the paths motorist should take. It's a plan advocated a few weeks ago by Ralph Roy "Out of Order" Waggener in It's just for a Smile News but he's not claiming credit for the outcome, which could have been caused by one of the three or four local shotcallers or could have been another good notion out of Somerset. So far it seems to be working well, as has the "left turn on yellow" change at the intersection of Jamestown Street and Russell Road.
