The 2nd Annual Book Fair: Here from Ireland

2013-06-01 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. From the Ireland Community or Burdick, in Taylor County. Carolyn Beard Gupton and her daughter Laura. Carolyn is a member of the Adair County Genealogical Society. "We could have joined Taylor, Green, or even Casey with our family backgrounds," Carolyn Gupton said, "But we chose Adair County because of our Beards." They had fun tracing family trees. On one branch, they go back to William the Conqueror. In another, to a distant maternal ancestor who came to America as an indenture servant, and they've become very involved in researching her story. Laura said that many people don't realize it today, but "identured servant" was a euphenism for "slave." They often lived in cruel, horrible conditions," she said. The two are helping out with the an information booth at today's Book Fair. - EW

2nd Annual Book Fair: Mike and Renea Watson

2013-06-01 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Early arrivals at the Book Fair this morning were Renea and Mike Watson. Mike Watson, the Adair County Historian, may be the best known figure in Adair County. His wife is from Augusta, KY - and yes, they know the Clooney's. Renea remembers when her baby sitter was a Clooney, and the time when she was a little girl, sitting on the knee of the sitter's brother, George Clooney. The Watsons have a number of books - many basic, must have Adair County histories - but equally important, the fair is a great time to share Adair County stories with a real authority on the history of the area. The book fair is still just getting underway, at the Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY.Second Annual History & Genealogy Book Fair & Sale on Saturday, June 1, 2013, from 10am-3pmCT/11am-4pmET, in the Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY.

Scenic Adair County, KY: Horse & Happy Hay Harvest

2013-06-01 - Johnson Schoolhouse Road, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Maybe this beautiful blaze faced horse thought I was my mother, who converses so easily with its kind. Maybe it was just guarding the harvest, thinking all that hay was its own. Sometimes it's hard to read a horse. Whatever, the horse and hay made one of the most beautiful scenes on picturesque Johnson School House Road, now quite gentrified with elegant houses but country scenes are as pretty as ever.
