Parking lot of Assisted Transportation Systems newly paved

2013-06-03 - Development Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The crown jewel of Green River Commerce Park, Assisted Transportation Systems, Inc. has just blacktopped its parking lot - a $70,000 additional investment in the plant and in the park. ATS, all locally developed, now has a payroll of $1 million annually. Many with top production jobs now earn $25 an hour. The opportunity to be able to work at home in Adair County prompted many to leave jobs paying $35 elsewhere; the workers preferred living in Adair County and being with their families to being able to earn more elsewhere. - EW

Maury's holed up snake is out of inside the tree

2013-06-03 - Beautiful Joppa, Adair County, KY - Photo by Maury Lewis. The snake is out of the tree and he is identified as a rat snake. He came out on his own. He is welcomed on this property and will not be bothered any more. If the identification is not correct then I will take correction and would appreciate being corrected. - Maury Lewis

Historic Columbia, KY: Group with Massie House in background

2013-06-03 - 200 Merchant Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from Hershel Harmon collection. Hershel Harmon shares this favorite old photo from his collection. It shows, from left, Montrie Beard Hayes, Hayden Harmon, and Nancy Litteral Rooks, with a car which looks to be from the post World War II era, and behind it, a pickup truck loaded with bags of feed, and behind that, the Massie House, later converted by Shirley Glasgow and James Woody into a business which continues today, the Adair County Southern States Cooperative store. The photo is taken on what appears to be a lot which now is, or is part of, the Columbia/Adair County Fire Department Building location.

Scenic Russell Co., KY: Plenty of water falls

2013-06-03 - Half Acre Ridge/Clear Springs Road, Russell County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Russell County's waterfalls never get the publicity Lake Cumberland does, but they are delightful water features. This one is not as grand as those on Greasy Creek or east of Jamestown out Cumberland Avenue, but it is a a calming, peaceful, welcome scene along the byway between Jamestown and Russsell Springs, on the "shortcut" Half-Acre Ridge Road. - CM

Sign Spellcheck

2013-06-02 - KY 61 South, Columbia, KY - Photo by Peg Schaeffer. Peg Schaeffer spotted this sign with Judge/Executive Ann "Milton" painted on it and wondered if the Sign Department needs a spell check. In fairness, anyone dealing with type needs all the help proofing they can get. (We especially appreciate the volunteer proofreading on CM; there's always something which gets by.)

Peg Schaeffer & Friends at Farmer's Market on the Square

2013-06-02 - Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Peg Schaeffer of Sugarfoot Farm Rescue with her one-woman, five-dog stand at the Farmer's Market on Square. She offered free literature and information on spaying and neutering programs. The two dogs in the cage are her personal pets - pampered show dogs, who go on pet therapy trips to Summit Manor and other places where the pets are invited and eagerly awaited. The beautiful German Shepherd, at right, made many friends. "She's the best rescue dog I ever had," Schaeffer says. Gypsy is still awaiting a "Furever Home," although he left a lasting impression on many people at the market with her warm, empathetic eye contact.
