Epicurean Kentuckian (Ad): Banana Split Cake at TaP's

2013-06-09 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Tish Paris, TaP\'s photo. TaP's Diner started Banana Split Craze at the cozy downtown cafe with Banana Split Pie. Now Pam Miller has added another version of Banana Split with this wickedly rich and scrumptious Banana Split Cake. Haven't heard yet if it will be a regular feature on the dessert list, but it was a big hit Sunday, June 9, 2013, when it made its first appearance.

Fourteen nights late: The Town Creek Catalpa blooms

2013-06-09 - East Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. We've never figured it out, but our catalpa always blooms a fortnight late. Two weeks after the majority are in full bloom, our breakfast tree, and old one standing by the waters whose trunk has long ago fallen to the ground, starts to blossom, first at the top of the tree, but the flowers generally cascade down to a few feet off the ground before the town ones are gone. It's our favorite tree. Catalpa worm rights belong to good friend Dallas Richards, who makes good use of them most springs. - EW

Downtown People: Walking Encyclopedia of Country Music

2013-06-09 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. Stanley Perkins is a walking encyclopedia of Country Music. And the best kind of person - a Downtown Person. He's of those who walk to to morning town for morning coffee. This morning, he was remembering Paul Gilley, the Maytown, Morgan County, KY, songwriter who drowned in a farm pond at the age of 27, in 1957, and who wrote some of the late Hank Williams' most famous songs. It all verifies, but CM hasn't been able to vouch for Perkins' story about his cornbread machine, one of only two in the world. Or that the other one was owned by Abraham Lincoln. On other subjects, he seems dead on. He's Russell Guy Perkins' brother, but different, he says, cliaming. "Russell Guy is a good man. I'm a Hellcat." Maybe, but Stanley is, for sure, an authority on country music. - EW
