500 Public Square: Home address of lots of folks

2013-06-18 - Historic Adair Co. Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Especially Pigeon Folk. Two dozen pigeons sit on the patio they still enjoy a few weeks after they were evicted from their belfry suite in the clocktower over housekeeping issues. It still a debated issue as to whether or not the birds are a plus or a minus, even outside, but so far extreme measures, such as were used in the 1950s, are not being used today. Back then, local marksmen were recruited to shoot the birds out of the air. After a long period of one sided combat, the birds retreated to Miss Mary Lucy Lowe's barn on Lowe's Lane, back when it was in the country, back before it became a state highway, back before the barn was razed to make room for new housing. - EW

Scenic Taylor Co., KY: Main Street in color after rain

2013-06-18 - Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith. I like the way the rain brought out the color in the evening photo on Main Street in Campbellsville, KY, and I especially appreciate the willingness to leave the wonderful old Ballard's OBELISK FLOUR/W.R. KNIFLEY GROCERY painted sign on the side of the building. - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications, in Campbellsville broadcasting at the Big Dawg, 99.9 FM

Epicurean Kentuckian: Up Ky 61, and back in time

2013-06-18 - Clay Ridge, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. (Ad) It just looks like a modern day place from long ago, a place to stop and sit a spell, visit, and enjoy good food, and good company - a place to have a picnic inside or out on the porch or shady lawn. And it is. You never know what kind of entertainment it will offer. Sometimes it's a neighboring, bearing garden truck, to make the salads and home cooked vegetables better - and to do a neighborly thing to keep a community institution going. Sometimes it's a Ph.D with a knack for teaching, enthralling Clay Ridge kids with riddles and math and integers and puzzles about going to St. Ives. It's the hometown of famous people - from many fields: business, military service, education, politics and writing. Today's picnic special: $1.99 Chili Dogs. Everyday, the Clay Ridge basic, Pinto Beans & Cornbread, just $1.99. And, every breakfasts anytime, plate lunches, and fresh cut salads at prices you might pay for coffee elsewhere. It's all at The Store in the Village of Clay Ridge, (Adair County), 7110 Greensburg Road, Columbia, KY. Sheila Ruczienski, owner/manager. Phone 270-385-9157. Hours: 6am-2pmCT/7am-3pmET, 7 days a week. All major credit cards. Smokers & Non

Approaching Dynamic Dunnville, KY, from the north

2013-06-18 - Dunnville, Casey Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Dunnville, KY is one of South Central Kentucky's most dynamic communities. On the left, above, is the impressive new headquarters for Tarter Industries. On the right, a new Casey County Bank. Straight ahead, the steeple of the newer Dunnville Christian Church. On the left, out of sight, a world class convenience store eatery, the Dogwalk Deli. On the right ahead, the remnants of Riggin's Restaurant, a wonderful restaurant of the past. Around the bend of road, Tarter Gate's original factory. And just ahead, on the right, the turn off this stretch of US 127 is River Road, which becomes Dunnville Road at the Casey/Adair line. Dunnville is the home of historian Paul Patton. If you go It's about 30 minutes - we suggest you drive a little slower, see a little more - by way or Russell Springs or by the shorter route through Eunice, KY, for a delightful day trip. See Google Map/Directions to plan a round trip.

Birds of KY: One hour old killdeer

2013-06-18 - Egypt, District 6, Adair Co., KY - Photo by George Rice. The beautiful baby is less than one hour old. It is obvious that little killdeers are hatched fully clothes and running. When I returned to the scene the next time there were three little birds running and mother and father birds were doing their rituals of showing me how crippled they were to lure me away from their chicks. - George Rice
