Birds of Kentucky: Faux Hawk keeps out pesky nest builders

2013-06-19 - 829 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The faux hawk in the rafters at the Second Christian Church Picnic Pavilion is one of two guarding the building against unwanted nests. So far, there's been no problem with birds or any of their messes in the structure. The birds were put there immediately after the the roof was constructed by Trustee Billy Wheat. It's an old trick his dad told him about, he said. Some other suggested placing fake black snakes in the rafters - that works too - but the plan was nixed when they thought about the plates of food which would be dropped by surprised diners. The hawk came from Tractor Supply in Columbia. It's been filled with sand to gift it a solid footing. Paired photo, see also: Bird frightener snake keeps carport cleaner Kenneth Janes' alternative.
