Old School Group needs ID, names of faces in photo

2013-07-02 - Printing Creations, 110 N. Monroe Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Joyce Coomer. Joyce Coomer at Printing Creations has been presented another mystery photo by someone hoping to have it identified and passed the puzzle on to us and we're passing it on the CM Readers - so now the burden of responsibility is squarely with y'all. Joyce and I have done all we can. If you know only the school and the exact or circa year, send that; if you know all the names, that would be fantastic. Surely, either way, there will be an extra jewel in your crown by and by. We'll appreciate it. And may we'll be able, sometime, to figure our a way to easily archive all the picture conundrums and maybe. Send comments using the "Comment's" button with this photo. - EW

(Star) Case in Red Brick Recording Studio is art itself

2013-07-01 - 200 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Recording stars and their retinues and entourages who stay overnight will ascend this circular staircase, a beautiful work of art from Anthony Janes' Fabco, Columbia, KY. Though several big names in the recording industry have visited the studio, no one has, as yet, stayed in the elegant quarters overlooking the Public Square and Burkesville Street. Many of the public will have a chance to see the just finished accommodations soon. Owner Mike Harris is planning some guided tours by invitation, and maybe, down the road, an open house. - EW

Downtown Columbia: Aerial Christmas Tree Farm

2013-07-01 - 214 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. At least from the ground they look like little pine trees. Every year, before the maintenance remove them, volunteer seedlings take root on the Purple Building. This year the crop of pines are the best ever, and regular enough to be a row on a Christmas tree plantation.

Natural Topiary for Adair County School campus

2013-07-01 - Off Indian Drive, Adair County School Campus - Photo by Ed Waggener. The mostly Eastern Red Cedar tree top at the entrance of the Adair County School Campus from Greensburg Street onto Indian Drive has a different look from every angle. From this one, it's obviously a green Holstein with a silver studded color, and a top do-ad which has a name, someplace, if anyone knows. From other angles, it looks like a Janis two-headed dog, maybe a giant Shih-Tzu and a big poodle, and a fox's face - maybe more: all of them as though they came from the same kind of imagination behind David Waltz' whimsical lamp bases. Could be the tree was trained this way on purpose. I wonder if anybody knows. - EW

Flags are flying for the Fourth - at City Hall

2013-07-01 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The first two calls we got at CM
this morning were from Larry Smith, coming into town from Campbellsville, and Linda Waggener, on her way to Campbellsville, both excited that the Flags were going up for the Fourth of July. One thing the city is doing right now is only flying bright, unfaded flags - whether one agrees with putthing them up and taking them down so often or prefers the budget for the flags be ample enough to keep them up continuously in warmer weather. - EW

A new item for this area: Gooseberries

2013-07-01 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Gooseberries made what is believed to have been the first appearance of the uncommon pie ingredient around these parts when Danny and Debbie Burris brought this one small container to the Saturday, June 29, 2013, Farmer's Market on the Square. But the berries are familiar to a large number of Adair Countians who have lived and worked in Indiana, were great groaning board cafeterias, like Poe's in Martinsville and hundreds of others, but their uses go beyond pies. According to the entry in Wikipedia, Gooseberry, the berries, fools and crumbles or Brown Betties, to flavor beverages, and for jams and dried fruit, and in pickling. Maybe a reader knows more about them, including whether they can be eaten raw. The exciting thing is the quality of the berries and learning that Adair County truck farmers and gardeners are experimenting. Who would have thought, before Larry Martin made Metcalfe County the Blue Berry Capital, that the crop is ideal for Kentucky hill country soil? Maybe we'll see Adair County Gooseberry Pie on a restaurant menu here, one day this season. - EW
