Columbia High School 1928 - Photo in ACPL Genealogy Library

2013-07-03 - 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo.
This photo is in the Genealogy Room at the Adair County Public Library is interesting for many reasons. Anyone in this group photo titled, Columbia High School, 1928, Columbia, KY, would like be at least 98 years old today - if it includes freshmen. But many remember the building as perfectly as if it were yesterday. For many of us, the trees had changed from those seen above, and the distant look in the right side, is much more developed, and by the time many of us arrived, in post WWII, the white frame residence was gone. My class started in the fall of 1946 and left eight years later. Eight of us completed all eight years and did advanced study all the way through Adair County High School.

Gary Coomer: Longest tenured of current LWC staff

2013-07-03 - Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Gary Coomer self-describes himself as "The Oldest Statue on the Hill." He's can claim the longest tenure of any current employee at Lindsey Wilson College, 42 years as of April 14; he started that year working with President John Burns Horton, and has worked with, in all, five college presidents, also including, in additon to Dr. Horton, President L.R. MacDonald, President John Begley, President Walter Reuling, and now President William Luckey. And, he says, "It's untelling how many vice presidents I've run through." He was asked if his tenure is the longest one in the history of the school, and wasn't sure. "I'd like to know," he said, and added that would be a great achievement. He's hoping that he won't have to stay past the 65 year old retirement age he's looking forward to enjoying to earn the added distinction. That will come in about 2 years, he said, when he'd have 44 years completed in his career at the school. Politicians should hope he doesn't run for office. He's one of the most popular men in Adair County - and to say he is an icon on campus is an understatement. He's one of Plant Operations Director Mike Newton's top and most valued aides, the Director is always quick to point out.
