Cafe on the Square: Bakery Goods & Big Talk of Beignets
2013-07-12 - 212 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. There may be no other bakery in Kentucky turning out this combination of exotic - to the Commonwealth - goodies. On Thursday, the pastries case had Frisbie sized Almond Cookies, very chewy and rich, left diamond, then clockwise: croissants, on which those wonderful, designer breakfast sandwiches are made to order; then bread pudding as a pastry; and, chocolate croissants. There's Big Talk coming from a VIP baker there hinting at better'n Cafe Du Monde beignets soon to be coming from an outdoor setup in front of the Cafe Jackson Square? Better'n that. These will have a Baton Rouge pedigree. The baker, when a little girl, remembers her German grandfather - her other grandfather was French - make the classic Creole item for her special breakfasts. The Cafe on the Square already offers the requisite accompaniment, cafe au lait - and may come up with Louisiana coffee/chicory for those who favor that. When it happens - if this isn't just big talk - the Mediterranean climate of Columbia takes on the flavor of America's one truly Old World City, N'awrluns, with a bit of Bayou/a bit of Baton Rouge. In the Cafe on the Square, 212 Public Square, Columbia, KY, where fusion cuisine is served everyday at one of Kentucky's most ethnically diverse eateries.
