Favorite Old Photo: Burkesville & Fortune Streets, Feb. 1972

2013-07-18 - Fortune & Burkesville Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of Larry Smith.
Larry Smith, Operations Manager for Shoreline Communications, came across this fabulous photo of Mrs. Morris Epperson and Miss Willie Rosenbaum posed near their home at the corner northwestern corner of the intersection of W. Fortune and Burkesville Streets. Significantly, all the buildings in the photo are still standing. Clockwise, from the women, the driveway of the First National Bank Drive In, the two story building is looks to be the back of the Harris Law Office Building. The Texaco Station is now Adair Farm Bureau South/Ernie Rogers office; and the Ashland Station is now headquarters of Walker Real Estate. On the right, the little white building is the Columbia City Maintenance Department's downtown storage building. From the date, which is known, some may be able to determine whether the Texaco Station was in the era of Harry Lee Dohoney or Lynn McLean, and whether Joe Hutchison was CEO at the Ashland Station or if it had already passed into its Golden Era, when Bill Ballou was the proprietor. - EW

Home to Green County, KY - Glenview

2013-07-18 - Green County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
This was once the center of the Glenview Campgounds a major church camp grounds, an important footnote in history, but importantly today, it was the boyhood of Columbia United Church Minister Bill Davenport. The old campgrounds had a tabernacle, hotel, and cabins with rotations of campers in summers many decades ago. Today, it may be known as much as a point on the Green River Paddle Trail as much as anything besides being Bro. Bill's homeplace.Last week, he retraced a lot of his growing up years in around the Bucknersville-Grab area along KY 88 in Green County. The stories he tells are filled with history, anecdotes and legend, made more plausible by the network of buddies, confidantes, cousins, and characters who make this area - at least to a majority in the 7-County area who have never been there - more fascinating than the movies. A few of the stories and photos will be coming in in the days ahead. - EW

(Ad) What's Cooking: Brown's Snicker's Pie, at Liberty Road

2013-07-18 - 5097 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Patty Edwards.
At Liberty Road General Store & Deli we use a simple formula: What we serve is the best. Yesterday we served Kentucky Legends Ham as a dinner with two sides and customers raved about it. Kentucky Legends just has the best texture, and the best taste. We keep it simple to deliver value, quickly, with generous portions at lower prices. Our desserts are the same. Desserts don't get any better than our Brown's Snicker's or our Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies we served on Wednesday. Watch for Thursday's specials in CM What's Cooking. - Patty Edwards Liberty Road General Store and Deli in the Village of Vester, (Adair County), 5097 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY 42728.
