Cash crop in the wild: Right of way blackberries

2013-07-22 - Ray Miller Road, District 6, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. There may not be enough here to quote Betty Sue Jasper's famous line "I see a cobbler in my future," but they are a delight to townies. Right of way blackberries on a lightly travelled country lane in Adair County, which can be secured from a step from the car, with half the risk of chiggers and blacksnakes, and half the risk of a June Bug startling than in a bigger bramble in the field. Wild blackberries are still a source of cash income. David Moore's at the Farmers Market on the Square last Saturday were the hit of the weekly fair. These were along Ray Miller, which intersects with Mt. Tussel Road and is itself a delightful stretch, with Crooked Creek from KY 551 to Caldwell Ridge. - EW

Bro. Travis Adams and his Horse Harness Hame Walking Stick

2013-07-22 - 17165 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Bro. Travis Adams "The Airplane Man," of Sanders Ridge Road, drew attention at brunch yesterday with his walking stick. Mrs. Marcum noticed the horse hame, which I had assumed was a dog wonker - a stand your ground defensive against biker, hiker, and runner chasers on Bull Run Road - but which she recognized as part of a horse collar. It is. Bro. Adams made the walking stick himself. The shaft is from an Adair County sycamore tree he said. Bro. Adams, and Emory University trained minister of the United Methodist Church has pastored many churches in the area, including Milltown and Tarter's Chapel UMCs before retiring. He's now writing his memoirs, which will be ready for publication after one more edit and preparation for the printer. He is a certified pilot, but not longer takes the controls, preferring to fly with Bill Trautwein's private strip behind Barnett's Creek Road, with the former Montana County Sheriff as pilot. He got the name "Airplane Man" from the JP-3 Piper model he built which is often on display in his yard on Sanders Ridge. (If he looks familiar, he is: The eyes remind that his brothers are former Police Chief Kenneth Adams, Campbellsville, KY; and Jessee Adams of Columbia, KY.)

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Mimosa on Mt. Tussel Road

2013-07-21 - Mt. Tussel Road, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Mimosa have been magnifient this year. This one took be back to my childhood in Sulphur Well. We had one mimosa tree in the corner of the yard. The flowers and the fragrance are wonderful. Here and there in Adair County there are some really big, really showy mimosas. The one is. But I noticed something new, this time, the tree trunk - a kid sized place to fantasize. For those who know, we had to take Mt. Tussel Road. There's a road - pretty by any name - but so far we haven't been able to find out which hill is Mt. Tussel. - Linda Waggener
