Scenic Taylor Co., KY: Welcome to Taylor County sign

2013-07-22 - Sandy Y, Taylor Co., KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg. This sign creates an inviting, welcoming atmosphere It's located off the south lane of KY 210 north of the Sandy Y in northern Taylor County. It's neat that the county is heart shaped and in the heart of Kentucky. I like this sign and think we need continue efforts like those of the Taylor County Tourism Commission. Remember: A business with no sign is the sign of no business. - LARRY SMITH, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications.

Bliss, KY, goes up in flames

2013-07-22 - Bliss, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Billy Wheat. Mayor Kenneth Scott and staff oversaw a control burn of the last house in old downtown Bliss, KY, which Mayor Scott owns outright, this morning, July 22, 2013. The house was where the late Lee Grissom, founder of what is now Grissom-Martin Funeral Home lived before he moved to Columbia. His daughter, Carrie Grissom Montgomery, spent part of her childhood there. No injuries were sustained in the project, but there was one unexplained loud boom during the burn. Larry Reliford was in charge of the trackhoe and dozer which cleaned up the site. The ancient chimney is now the property of Cheryl Scott Holland. She plans to disassemble the chimney and rebuild it in Warren County, KY. Paired Photo Bliss, KY, goes up in flames: But chimney still stands by Billy Wheat.

Insects of Kentucky: Butterflies, mud-puddling on Ray Miller Road

2013-07-22 - Ray Miller Road, District 6, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. It's a scene often seen, but seldom understood the gathering of butterflies on a dry bridge, as these are above, often of diverse species of butterflies. Maybe not enough to be a bona fide rabble of butterflies, but several. It's not always, in full context, so pretty a picture. We've excised the litter they were feeding on. It's interesting to learn that they are after, not sugar, but nutrients such as salt and amino acides, according to the Wikipedia entry, Mud-puddling. These were sighted on the dry bridge over a small stream - no name as she knows of, according to Lisa Greer, expert on the subject of bridges in the office of Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton. - EW

Hard at work on new school year

2013-07-22 - Booster Field, 224 Gen. John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne, Adair Co. School District photo. I don’t know who is more dedicated - the ADAIR band or Danny Foster of the Adair County School Systems Maintenance Department, all of whom are working in the rain to make Adair County School System look good! Dany is driving the tractor, and, lower right, a few of the ADAIR Band at Summer Camp on Booster Field. In the band area, in no particular order , are band kids Jonathan Burbridge, Grant Cockerham, Jordan Pollard, Kelly Jones, and Instructors Jared Giles and Assistant Director Jonathon Holmes. It's a reminder of 1) Something is going on on campus almost every day of the year, and 2) the 2013-14 School Year for students' Countdown is: 23 days from today to Wednesday, August 14, 2013!. - Shamarie Claiborne Clicking ReadMore accesses Open House Calendar of Events leading up to First Day.

Architectural cast iron signature

2013-07-22 - 101 & 103 E Main Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg. The cast iron signature on the plate between Big Dawg Studio, the oldest building on Main Street in Campbellsville, KY (1850-60). The light paint on the left is 101 Main Street, owned by Mike Harris of Columbia. The red brick building is the David Nunnery law building. The first bar in Campbellsvile was at 101 E Main. Jimmy the Greek served the first legal drink of alcohol in Campbellsville. The first newspaper in Taylor County was in the building, as was a Coca-Coca Cola bottling plant. Most of the architecural iron trim in this area of Kentucky carries "G.L. Mesker & Co., Evansville, Ind." and I believe this is from the same firm. - Larry Smith
