Signage: Functional, aesthetic, and here, they mean it

2013-08-08 - ACPC, 158 Col. Casey Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Slower speed limits protect the littlest Adair County kids: The speed limit on Col Casey Drive approaching the Adair County Primary Center is 15mph, 10 miles an hour lower than the 25 mph (too fast in our view - CM) posted on Indian Drive, the main drive through the beautiful hilltop campus. The signs means 15 mph, and 25 mph, Superintendent Alan Reed says, not the assumed fudge factor of 9 miles per hour a few drivers assume. Since assuming office, the superintendent has made it a priority to have better signage; to have more aesthetic signs, without sacrificing functionality. With large street number signs on each building, and planned higher education style street side signs perpendicular to the street and safely visible from both directions, and with the street number on the signs, the campus is becoming a national model for campus navigability, student safety, and visitor friendliness. A hidden benefit is that the campus will be greener, and first response teams won't be burdened with additional training costs. Scenic Adair Co., KY - A lot of history in old Absher school

2013-08-08 - Egypt, KY - Photo by George Rice.
Old school houses
- There is a lot of forgotten history in many old country school houses such as this one on Joe Hendrickson's farm in the Adair County Egypt community of KY 551/Knifley Road, Columbia, KY. This school was known as the Absher black school and according to a library account by Mike Watson the school was probably built in 1933 and existed until 1950. The building still stands, thanks to Mr. Hendrickson, and with the faithful teachers of its day the school made a difference in the lives of many young people who grew up to make fine outstanding citizens. Some of the teachers that taught school there were Beulah Lasley, Ida White Walker, Annie Lasley, and Ora Lee Curry. - George Rice - Photo By George Rice, May 2013

Reed expressed appreciation to the Maintenance Department at an Appreciation Luncheon held for them today, Wednesday, August 7, 2013. He acknowledged a debt of gratitude for the work the department did in virtually transforming the campus appearance in preparation of the start of school one week from today, Wednesday, August 14, 2013. The luncheon was host by Mr. Reed and the Adair County School Board, with a dinner prepared by Board Member Mike Harris (Div 5) which included BBQ Brisket and Pulled Pork, coleslaw, the best baked beans anyone ever ate, corn pudding, and plenty of drinks and bread. At Mr. Reed's side is Maintenance Director Ricky Bault. Around the table, clockwise, are Charlie Dial, Trent Booher, Mark Parnell, Sam Hitch, and Jackie Wethington - just part of the staff present. - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications.

Another Bridge - One of 2 - underway on Avery Rooks Road

2013-08-07 - Avery Rooks Road, Little Cake, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A new bridge is underway near Little Cake, in Harold Burton's Big One District. This one is on Avery Rooks Road, which runs parallel to Neat Hollow Road off Little Cake Road in Northern Adair County. The bridge is another constructed in house by the Adair County Road Department, Jobe Darnell Superintendent. We've lost count, but will post later, on how many bridges have been built in CJE Ann Melton's two terms - but it's likely a record number for any chief executive. All the equipment above is owned by the County, including the retired school bus, now seeing service as a tool wagon. - CM
