Residents think it will be a "speed enhancement program," and complain that the stretch is already dangerous and that a slowdown of traffic, not an invitation to to go faster, is needed. - Ed Waggener

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Jamestown Hill on rainy evening

2013-08-09 - 300 Block, Jamestown Street, KY - Photo CM staff photo. In this compressed view, somehow the Jamestown Hill doesn't seem as steep as it was when a kid could get up to 50 mph measured on a windspeed cereal box speedometer, and sometimes, for richer kids, measured with a state-of-the art cable turned Stewart Warner bicycle speedometer, with an anagram face every bit as impressive as the one on their father's 150 Chevrolet or Mainline Ford, either plainer than a Mennonite sedan - what Mechanix Illustrated auto reviewer call, "broom peddlers" specials. At least two constants in the photo: The courthouse, which has only changed colors; and the no longer original Dairy Queen - but maybe better, since Sandra Keltner's family reopened it as "Sweets & Eats." The soft serve is even better than DQ, and the constant lines at 114 Jamestown Street attest to its popularity.

Life in the Holler: The Pelly's front yard swing

2013-08-09 - Topside of The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Ozark, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
The Pelly’s front yard has this wonderful swing in it.
This morning it looked even more cozy than usual with all the rain. It seemed to be covered from storm. A perfect spot to spend the day. Someday I will have to ask Kim if I can have a rest and check out the view from a different angle. - Shamarie Claiborne

Mr. Jack Scott's Tobacco Setter: now a treasured keepsake

2013-08-09 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Bill Wheat.
This tobacco setter
was originally designed to be drawn by a team of mules. It was once used by the late Jack Scott at his farm on Edmonton Road. It's now a treasured keepsake, owned by Bill Wheat, who remembers when he worked with Mr. Jack Scott, and later, with Mr. Scott's son, Kenneth, who gave the implement to Bill Wheat. Some where in the history of the machine, Mr. Scott, reworked it to be pulled by a tractor.
