Joe Lynn Barbee: Eyewitness to the big Russell Creek floods
2013-08-11 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. Joe Lynn Barbee above had first memories of the flooding patterns Russell Creek and Bull Run Creek and remembers the flood of 2010 as the worst. Sammy Kassem, who had lifetime memories of flooding at the confluence of Sulphur Creek and Russell, concurred that the waters were highest in their memory in 2010, though consulting engineers of Stantec, said this was only a 50 year flood. Mr. Barbee and Mr. Kassem offered first hand accounts of the floods, at the hearing on flooding events at a hearing on effects of a Columbia/Adair County Utilities District (CAUD) project to realign the banks of Russell Creek, with rip rapping, at the utility's wastewater plant. The hearing was held Thursday, August 8, 2013, just prior to a meeting at which CAUD gave the go-ahead to the project.

Gradyville Baptist Church, August 10, 2013
2013-08-11 - 159 Old Gradyville Church Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The Little Church in Big Creek Valley the focal point of a scene symbolizing what's right in the world, was a scene of togetherness last evening, Saturday, August 11, 2013 at the First Annual Gradyville Baptist Church Community Fish Fry, Kiddy Day, and Saturday Night Singing. It was a symbol, first, of humanity's search for spiritual truths. It was a Norman Rockwell, exemplified. It was a symbol of brotherhood, of community - with a cross mix of faiths, from members of the Amish Community coming in buggies, bikes, and on foot, to to those of many other Christian persuasions, coming in motor vehicles from all over Adair and many surrounding counties, especially Green County, the home of the pastor, Bro Keith Fields, and where Brandon Bennett teaches in the high school at Greensburg. Mike and Debbie Bennett, leaders in the revival which has taken place Sunday by Sunday over the past year, say that some 60 people attend regularly today, with crowds for special events like this one registering well over 100 to as high as 160 and more. Scenic Adair Co., KY: Gradyville Baptist Church
2013-08-11 - 159 Old Gradyville Church Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Melissa Stone. This is not just a picturesque Country Church,It also has the distinction of being in close proximity to two of the greatest catfish fishing holes in the world -- at least in the minds of the Stone children. The first, we were introduced to by a kind and generous man, Mr. Woodson Nell. The other was found during a great summer expedition by none other than my favorite brother, Mr. Lenny Stone! - Melissa Stone.
CM NOTE August 11, 2013: This photo is still one of my all time favorites. The little church is deeply etched in the memory banks of perhaps hundreds of thousands of travelers as a symbol of what's right in the world. Melissa Stone caught its significance beautifully here. And the accompanying story she wrote captures the essence of growing up in Gradyville. Today, there's a renaissance period in Gradyville. This church is a big part of it. 2013-08-10 - ACPC, 158 Col. Casey Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. Areas at Adair County Primary Center still under construction when classes start on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 are locked off. Children won't be able to get in the construction area and construction workers won't be able to enter the classroom area, Superintendent Alan W. Reed says. On the other side of this locked door is the cafeteria/auditorium, which is connected by an already finished double stage connecting to a similar room, the gymnasium/auditorium. It too will be secure. Superintendent Reed says that for approximately the first 10 days of school, lunches will be prepared in other campus cafeterias and transported to ACPC.
