Oak Ridge to Indy and Back Cyclist: Mack Bailey
2013-08-17 - Adair Farmers Market, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Retired Oak Ridge Tennessee Fire Chief Mack Bailey paused for a moment to list to Living Waters, performing gospel music at the Farmers Market on the Square this morning, Saturday, August 17, 2013. Riding an 80 pound when loaded, 21 speed Rivendale touring bike, he had ridden to Columbia from Green River State Park this morning. He was on his way to Lake Cumberland State Park in Jamestown, KY. Chief Bailey left Oak Ridge on August 5, 2013. He travels about 70-75 miles per day, leaving just a bit over two days to go to get back to Oak Ridge, but he said his son may come get him and cut the trip short,, but only because of the storms expected later today. (Among dedicated cyclists, that a valid reason for cutting an announced mission short.) He's taken the blue highways and backroads along the way. Among the memorable stops were one at Brown County State Park near Nashville, IN, and Bardstown, KY. And the most pleasant biking this trip? "Riding through the corn fields near Indianapolis," he said. Columbia would be easy to remember. "I was born in Columbia - Columbia, SC," he said.
