2013-08-22 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Both the Sung and Unsung Kind - Caesar, David Moore's 235 pound Great Dane is widely publicized and appreciated. But the backbone of the organization, Wayne Armitage, taking a long deserved pause, belongs in that Pantheon of Unsung Heroes exemplified by Farmers Market on the Square Stalwarts Prof. Jeff Scott, Mr. Apple of Antioch, and Mr. Joe Moore. 2013-08-22 - ACPC, 158 Col. Casey Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne, Adair Co. School District photo. Casey to ACPC, making sure the "Liftoff to Learning," with the ACPC Rockets would be a perfect launch. It was. Patty Jones, Principal at ACPC, had this to say about his role, as a hero among heroes, "I don't know how I would have survived the summer without Randall and the team of custodians who worked with him. They spent countless hours, days, nights and weekends to make sure that our school was ready for students on August 14. They are the true heroes of this move." - Shamarie Claiborne

Epicurean Kentuckian: Cooking with Herbs from (Y)OUR garden

2013-08-22 - Shelby Co., KY - Photo by Pen. At Christmas in July, my family's major reunion, the most memorable dish - and the food was fantastic at all the meals we had in Shelbyville - the one I can't get out of my mind is this awesomely (put in EvanSpeak, "Infinity Awesomely") simple dishes, which redeemed a food I'm not particularly fond of - Honeydew. From childhood I had never understood why Honeydews were needed when cantaloupes and watermelons were so much better. Now I know. They are an excellent complement to the an herb which is synonymous with Kentucky: Mint. Being a frequent teetotallarian and eschewing that other mint concoction, and not being willing to mention it's indescribably deliciousness and mellowing qualities; and with the Adair County Garden Club's Class today on "Cooking with Herbs from Your Garden," Class at 1pmCT at the Chamber Building, 201 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY and with the possibility they may overlook this dish, now therefore - The Epicurean Kentuckian offers this dish: Honeydew melon sprinkled with Backyard Kentucky mint, with lime juice - native to the Shelbyville, KY, Kroger Store. - ED WAGGENER

Insects of Kentucky: Butterflies & Beautiful but Pesky Plant

2013-08-22 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Despite its beauty the nodding thistle is an invasive pest. However, butterfiles don't seem to see it that way. Maybe there's some other way to control them, other than cancer causing herbicides. Anyone know an alternative? - Ed Waggener Clicking Readmore accesses the butterfly album started by Tommy Bailey and includes three incredibly beautiful photos by him.
