L "Daddy Bill" Walker, the founder of one of Columbia's longest running traditions, "Buy, Swap, Sell & Trade," held each Labor Day."This community was built by volunteers," is a well-remember quote of Mr. Walker, one of Columbia's all time outstanding volunteers, according to Mary Allender, former Adair 911 Coordinator, who said, in 2009, that Bill Walker's assessment several decades ago is even more true today. Kentucky Color: Crepe Myrtle, shedding its skin

2013-08-25 - Green Hills, Columbia, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
The White Crepe Myrtle
in my yard sheds it's skin each late summer and reveals a most righteous red bark. I walk under this tree just about every day and enjoy the green and the white and the red while drinking in it's mild fragrance that lays softly upon the nasal palate similar to Honey Suckle. However, the most intoxicating effect of this tree is not the look nor is it the smell but the feel. To lay the back of the hand upon the bark of this tree is to caress cool, surgical steel. I've yet to experience a feel in the plant kingdom as silky smooth as this one. - Billy Joe Fudge
