Old Montpelier Road Bridge - This Year?

2013-08-30 - Montpelier, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton said this morning that this bridge will be replaced, but she's not sure if the Adair County Road Department will get to it this year. The dry bridge presently on Old Montpelier Road frequently acts as much as a dam as a bridge. It's barely visible in this photo, but there is a huge pile of driftwood on the left, far side of the dry bridge. Already this year, the county has a new bridge in place on Avery Rooks Road near Little Cake. Another is planned for Clearsprings Road in District 2. The bridge above, which will be built with Adair County Road Department funds, would be the third this year for Melton's Administration. Money for the project is not an issue, the CJE said. It's more manpower. "We have to get caught up on regular maintenance before winter comes," she said. (Comments? Memories? Please send, using the "Comments" button with this letter. For Big Thinkers: Is there a profitable good use for the driftwood? Joe Coffey, for whom the bridge ought to be named, said that wood which stays under water often makes the best lumber. He remembers stumps pulled out of Louisiana Bayous back in his pipelining days. "They must have been 100 years old," he said, "but they were a solid at could be, and you could use a cigarette lighter on the roots, even before they were dry, and light a fire. That was because there was so much turpentine in the them." Just wondering if there might be an entrepreneurial opportunity here, as private enterprise is finding in the recycling business these days.-EW)

Joe Coffey sends photo bear swimming near Wolf Creek Dam

2013-08-29 - Near Indian Creek, Above Wolf Creek Dam, Jamestown, KY - Photo From Joe Coffey, Montpelier, KY. Joe Coffey sends this photo sent to him by his nephew, Jason Coffey, who works for Norton Healthcare in Lousville, KY, was was with a friend who took the photo. Joe Coffey said this black bear was swimming in the lake and that the far side in the picture is near the Indian Creek inlet toward the Clinton side of the lake. "There's no way to really judge," he said, "but I'd think the bear would weigh around 300 pounds." For other Blue Ribbon Bear Board Members, and others, the location is about 26 miles from Downtown Columbia, KY, where BRBB members believe, Bears probably crossed before the Long Hunters disturbe there peaceable bear way of life - back then eating most blackberries, croppie and just an occasional ancestor of ours. - EW
