Bouquet of Goldenrod & the age of flight in Adair County, KY

2013-09-20 - Little Cake Road, Purdy, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A roadside bouquet of the Goldenrod, the state flower, across from Purdy Separate Baptist Church, welcomes travelers onto Little Cake Road from Kentucky 206/Liberty Road. The small dot at 8 o'clock from the tallest goldenrod spike could appear to be over famed Streeval Field, but it is not. It's just a bee, bumbling just inches from it's feeding ground. The photo was taken Friday, September 19, 2013. - CM

Present day look at Gentry Store, Ella, KY

2013-09-20 - 10698 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Heading east from Columbia, toward Liberty, KY travelers see what was Robert & Pauline Gentry's Store, which has undergone some changes over the years, but is still a comforting reminder of what is and what was at the location. Today, it's one of the area's most popular cafes. At mealtimes and, especially of Friday & Saturday nights, diners fill every available parking spot and those waiting for seats often line up out on the porch. Inside, the store walls have been transformed into a virtual museum, with memorablia including mirror similar to one which once aided Adair County School Bus safety and was a very distinguishing landmark for the community.

A reminder, but not The Nolen Roberts mirror

2013-09-20 - 10698 Liberty Road, Columbi, KY. - Photo by Ed Waggener. A round mirror hangs in 206 Grocery & Grill at 10698 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY, the business which occupies the building where Robert & Pauline Gentry operated Gentry's Store. Present proprietor Ricky Burton is quick to tell customers who ask that this mirror is similar - and smaller - than the one Adair County Bus Driver Nolan Roberts installed on the Sulpher Creek Road side of the slightly zagging 4-way intersection, which allowed him to observe the traffic on KY 206 before entering from Neat Hollow Road. A tiny edge of Sulpher Creek Road can be seen out the front window, above.

Maupin Barber Shop Shoeshine chair/National cash register

2013-09-20 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Lee Ann Sullivan. For children of the mid-1900s, these fixtures are unforgettable seen every time many of them got weekly and bi-weekly haircuts. The pieces are now treasured memorabilia of Lee Ann Sullivan, the granddaughter of the shop's last proprietor, Mattie Maupin. It was a time of elegant dress and impeccable grooming for most downtown physicians, bankers, insurance brokers, real estate agents, and business proprietor and many retail clerks. A memorable shoe shine man at this shop was Kenneth Warren, the son of Elmer Warren. The elder Mr. Warren held the very honored job of distributing all the Courier-Journal Louisville newspapers which came into Columbia and who used the barber shop on Saturdays and Sundays to do the two collations needed to assemble each of 350-500 fat Sunday edition of the C-J's on Sundays.

(Ad) Epicurean Kentuckian: Jumbo Frog Legs + Fresh Salad

2013-09-20 - 10698 Liberty Road, Columbi, KY. - Photo by CM Advertising. The Frog Legs are big, meaty flavorful - as good or better than anywhere, and worth more trips back to 206 Country Grocery & Grill, 10968 Liberty Road, in the Ella Community of Adair County. (That's a single order, by the way.) But the Redskins, the eighths pices of redskin potatoes are addictively delicious and for many, the star of the Friday & Saturday night menus at Ricky Burton's popular restaurant. He's serves catfish, shrimp, steak and frogleg and crableg platters in about any combination one would like, from 11am-to 9pmCT, on the Friday/Saturday menus. A Generous Order Of Catfish with Coleslaw & Hushpuppies is $6.95. The Froglegs with Redskins with the Side Salad, above, is $8.95. The steaks tonight are some beautful T-Bone cuts.
