ACHS student Trevor Stonecypher
gives a high-five to an excited ACPC student, Autumn Jones, who had just finished the Hay Maze during Pumpkin Patch Activities yesterday. The blazing sprinter is Payton Bell. The rain has halted activities this morning but should be back in full swing this afternoon. Shamarie Claiborne, Adair County School District

Epicurean Kentuckian: Fix 'at up spaghetti at TaP's

2013-10-03 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Spaghetti has become regular once-a-week fare at many Adair County restaurants. When the cost of the meal is less than a Starbuck's latte, it takes a real pain in the neck to ask to customize it. Some - well, me - do though. Most of the plate is the standard $3.99 plate. But this one is fixed up; it has shredded cheese, diced onions and diced jalapeno (Halloween in homage to the late, great Barbara Hatcher). This pepper had the kick of haberneros, scovilling off the scale! Still, eating through the tears, it was pretty much fantastic. Though I forget to really fix it up with Tabasco. Made me think Cincinnati Five Way at half the price. - EW

Downtown: Beautiful Mums

2013-10-03 - Photo by Ed Waggener. These mums were purchased on the Square in Downtown Columbia from Cafe on the Square. $9 each. Had never noticed one so large and so perfectly formed. Even getting knocked over by neighborhood cats or the raccoons, it still held its shape. Seemed like a good deal. -EW

Bunny is getting pretty fragile after year of hard use

2013-10-03 - Photo by Tom Waggener.
Tillie has doubled down on her bond with Bunny.
She now refuses to let me take Bunny while she stays at day care, sometimes refers to Bunny as "her" (pronouns, yayyyy!) and pretty much drags Bunny everywhere. It's cute, but that lovey is getting pretty fragile after a year and a half of hard use. Tom Waggener (Click on Readmore for Martha Berry's related story about a favorite toy)

Downtown Columbia: Finishing touches to Dakota Meyer sign

2013-10-03 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Boxes of rock await the mason who will complete the stone framing for the "Home of Sgt. Dakota Meyer/Medal of Honor Recipient" sign on the Jamestown Street side of the Historic Adair County Courthouse. CJE Ann Melton had hoped to have the work done earlier, but awaited a final decision as to whether the additions on the courthouse would be removed or not get matching brick. To move the project ahead, Judge Melton has chosen stone for the frame. The work should be done in time for the next major showing of the building, the The Adair Heritage Association's "A Taste of the Past Primitive Fair," 9am-4pmCT, Saturday, November 2, 2013, for this year's in the Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY. Major work on the heating & air conditioning and the public restrooms are already complete. (See: Adair Heritage Prim Fair will be Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013)

Is there a prettier mailbox in the county?

2013-10-02 - College Park, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
There was absolutely no disappointment
after finally seeing this mailbox so many had told us about, most recently Charles & Barbara Barnes and David Waggener, while out at supper Wednesday night. They are neighbors of Bill & Rosa Vittitoe, the owners of the residence with the mailbox with the pink mandevilla (ID courtesy Charles Marshburn). Mrs. Vittitoe said that got the plant after she had received a call from Columbia Landscaping, suggesting the plant; whe bought it, and the only disappointment she expects will be this winter. "I just wish it could stay like this year round," she said, a sentiment shared by all who have seen it. - EW
