Silent City 2013 - Wanda Beard as Mary Cartwright Garnett

2013-10-29 - Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Wanda Young Beard: as Mary Cartwright Garnett. Silent City audiences know to expect solid performances from Wanda Beard. This was one of her best presentations, a re-enactment of a woman not far from the memories of so many, of a woman born into a great Clinton County family, the Cartwrights and grew up on Lindsey Hill in Columbia and married into a foundation family, the Garnetts, but, as a relatively young widow, had to rely on her own enterprise after James Garnett died at age 45. Mrs. Beard's scholarship and detailed memories of her own time with Mary Garnett made a great life come to life. The presenter's wonderful incidental touches of humor brought smiles to the faces at this point. Some faces and people above: Gerald Coomer, far left; and from left in the arc, Cathy Cox, the lady in green; Barry Loy whose performance as Martin Luther Loy would be seen a little later in the video at the library, and, at far right, Mr. Richard Phelps, this year giving an unforgettable portrayal of Columbia's founding father Daniel Trabue.

Silent City 2013: The procession - the same; and different

2013-10-29 - Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. There's an Our Town quality about every year's production of The Silent City. The long procession from the Old Cemetery to a newer section is a bit of a time lapse with a few added, a few left, other seeming to change, and everything changing, just as the passing parade in Downtown Columbia changes but little and then over a decade or a century, everything changes. For those of us who see life as theatre, it doesn't matter when one steps into to be part of the audience - life is a continuum, anytime is a great time to join, any time is OK to leave, as some had during the performances. Ahead, the procession moves on to see Wanda Beard as Mary Cartwright Garnett, passing by a Breeding and the Fouser monuments. On the left, in black, is Adiar County historian Mike Watson, who portrayed Revolutionary War soldier William Hurt in Travis Smith's video Looking Back . . . and on the right, in the long black period dress, Lee Ann Jessee, who had given the first presentation of the evening as Nancy Russell East.

Silent City 2013: Adair County's Tony Curtis & Janet Leigh

2013-10-29 - Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Silent City aficionados always know they are in for a treat when the great husband-wife team of J.D. & Ellen Zornes turn comes - they're the Columbia version of Tony Curtis & Janet Leigh or maybe Robert Wagner & Natalie Wood, or Hume Cronyn & Jessica Tandy. This year was a triumph, with the popular couple presenting Tim & Sallie Bradshaw, early merchants in Columbia. Sallie Bradshaw ran a very successful millinery shop, at a time when no decent woman would be seen outside, and Tim Bradshaw was a visionary who expressed interest in investing in the electric railroad to Lebanon, KY.

Silent City 2013: Mother-daughter stars of Screen & Stage

2013-10-29 - Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The Kathy & Korianne Cox - first time presenters, wowed the audience with a range of emotions. Cathy Keltner Cox was her grandmother Shastia Daisy Keltner, the colorful and long time postmaster at Gradyville in the third vignette in the in the video, "Looking Back . . . a journey through The Cemeteries of Adair County," an installment which, true to her grandmother's sense of humor, brought frequent laughter at the presentation, and smiles throughout. Cathy Cox's daughter, Korianne Cox, now a teacher in the Green County School system, gave a polished performance as Fannie, one of the three members of the Winfrey Hotel who died on the same day during the the cholera epidemic which took 70 lives in Columbia, KY, and was the cause of the closing of the Winfrey's Hotel.

Silent City 2013: Lee Ann Jessee as Nancy Russell East

2013-10-29 - Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Lee Ann Jessee, Director of the Adair County Public Library, is also a frequent re-enactor at Silent City productions and always, an audience favorite. This year, she was Nancy Russell East, the first presentation of the Walking Tour of the Columbia Cemetery, in a section called the Old Cemetery, closest to Campbellsville Street.

Part of the long procession to the Silent City

2013-10-29 - 300 Block, Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Even cool drizzle couldn't dampen the enthusiasm for some of the best theater in Kentucky, the Adair County Public Library and Adair Genealogical Society's 7th production of the Silent City. This year, with the addition of Lindsey Wilson College's Travis Smith video produced at five cemeteries out in the county, shown, with refreshments in the basement of the library afterward, it was all-in-all, a huge success, one of the best Silent City productions ever. - Ed Waggener

Lost Dog is ranging along Old Gradyville Road

2013-10-29 - Old Gradyville Road, Gradyville, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst. This dog, a female, possibly yellow lab mix, has been ranging along the Old Gradyville Road for several days. She is friendly, but a little timid. She was briefly in our carport, looking for food, but isn't staying here. She needs to be claimed/rescued. Sharon Whitehurst
