Epicurean Kentucky: Adair County Persimmons

2013-11-10 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. These persimmons from the Gradyville area have gone through a frost, fell from the trees, and are pronounced ready for snacking in their fresh state or going into delightful Thanksgiving puddings and pies. A taste test proved them sweet and delicious. Persimmons don't seem to be so common anymore, so many don't know that if eaten before that frost they can make ones mouth pucker up like taking a tablespoon of alum - a very unpleasant experience.

The envy of Columbia-Adair County Airport: 1953 Piper Pacer

2013-11-10 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Chris Janes' 1953 Piper Pacer tail wheel, is 60 years old, but looks like it just rolled off a factory show floor. Janes bought the craft from the estate of a Monroe County man about in 2009. The owner died shortly after completely rebuilding the classic air craft. All the design is true to the original, and the paint color is the same as the original. The plane is fabric covered. Some instrumention is new, and it's self-starting. Other than that it is original. With Mr. Janes, above, is his youngest son, Luke, a student at Adair County Elementary. Both Luke and brother Clayton, 11, have plans to be pilots when they grow up; Clayton even knows, already, that he wants to make a career of aviation. Chris Janes is the Chairman of the Columbia/Adair County Air Board. He lives on his grandfather's, Bea Janes home place on Toria Road, and is a construction supervisor for Jeff Robards Construction Company of Shepherdsville. He's currently Constable in District 4, but filed this week to run for the Republican nomination for Adari County Sheriff, subject to the May 20, 2014 primary election.

2013-11-10 - Hudson Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The ever-changing display of hundeds of vehicles makes many wonder if it may be done by magic or men at the Franklin Family Group of Dealerships. Many days the displays are taken for granted. Yesterday afternoon, the mid fall angle of the sun on the bonnets of the military line up of - from a distance what appeared to be the identical sedans - couldn't escape attention. - CM
