The world - with provenance

2013-11-16 - JAIS, 202 Gen. John Adair School, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. So many people want a brick from an old building as a souvenir: But these globes will prove of more long term interest than a brick. It's not a constant nag, for me to want an old time spinning globe, but it's been a want several times, especially when around grand kids. These are part of the surplus auction sale the Adair County School Board is holding this Saturday. I'd think it would be grand for a former John Adair Intermediate School student to own one with built in provenance, "This was from my grammie . . ." to show off to their grand kids. Maybe someone remembers. - EW. Clicking on ReadMore accesses a wonderful essay on globes by Peggy Fudge.

An Oscar, a mini mural, public art on soon to be razed JAIS

2013-11-15 - JAIS, 202 Gen. John Adair School, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. For a teacher, there must not be any higher accolade than this one. This is just one of the public art pieces left on the walls of John Adair Intermediate School. In it's final year, John Adair, the building, was the No. 1 school facility in the Commonwealth needing replacement. John Adair, the school was the No. 1 in academic achievement in the system. In a short time, John Adair, the building will be gone and may be forgotten, but not John Adair, the school.

Memories on sale at John Adair Intermediate School

2013-11-15 - JAIS, 202 Gen. John Adair School, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A walk through John Adair Intermediate School before the the big surplus auction tomorrow would make anyone nostalgic - even those of us who never attended the school. Sure to appeal to any book scout is it tatter copy of Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows. In the whole library, this appeard to have been the most read book of all. One wonders the numbers of children who were as enthralled with the book as the President Theodore Roosevelt was, according to the lengthy entry on the book in Wikipedia, (Wind in the Willows) and how many dreamed of having their own Toad Hall when they grew up, and, if perchance, there is a house by that name. The book, almost assuredly, will be gone in a matter of hours; the auction on Saturday is the clear around all the physical inventory, and with it will go a lot of memory evoking icons.
