Christmas Season is officially here - almost

2013-11-28 - Circle R, 712 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo Ad by CM Staff.
Santa, assisted by two elves - Welcomed Thanksgiving Day diners to the Circle R today. The restaurant is open regular hours today, one of only two of CM's regular What's Cooking restaurants to be open today. Officially, Christmas in Columbia season starts when the Columbia City Street Department puts up the Christmas decorations on the utility poles around town. Haven't heard from City Hall, but will be looking tomorrow. CM will be posting Christmas in Columbia events shortly.

Epicurean Kentuckian: 1st Course? And save room for Turkey

2013-11-28 - 5097 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. The Peach Cobbler is almost too pretty to cut. It's part of the Thanksgiving Day Dessert List at Liberty Road General Store and Deli, in the Village of Vester, (Adair County), 5097 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY 42728, one of two of the What's Cooking restaurants open with Thanksgiving meals. It would be tempting to eat dessert first, even if that's not your custom.

Kentucky Color: Clam Shell Frost Flower near Crocus Creek

2013-11-28 - Amandaville, Cumberland Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester, KY State Division of Forestry.
"I call this a Clam Shell Frost Flower," writes Billy Joe Fudge. "As you can see, the weed has been broken off, causing the water vapor to spew up and out in a fairly uniform fashion." The natural phenomenon was photographed on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, on Hopewell Acres, the Chattin and Libby Chowning farm now owned by their sons, Joe Chat and John Chowning. CM file photo which set off Intense Interest in Frost Flowers. 2009-12-17 - Chowning Farm, Amandaville, Cumberland Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Turkey off the Grid

2013-11-28 - EK Backyard Kitchen - Photo by Pen (file photo). Turkey off the grid: Pen writes (2011-11-24): I awoke on Thanksgiving morning to some cruel math -- there was simply no way to oven roast our partially frozen turkey in time for the scheduled meal. Luckily, I remembered something (probably from years-ago science classes at ACHS) about increasing surface area to decrease cooking time. I consulted the Googles, hastily butterflied the bird, and--since I was already off-the-reservation, culinarily speaking--I headed out to the bbq grill with the halved turkey and a Monroe-County-inspired basting sauce of cider vinegar, honey, salt, sage, thyme and mustard. Three and a half hours later, we had a pretty tasty meal and possibly a new Thanksgiving tradition. First Posted in Epicurean Kentuckian following Thanksgiving 2009. It's a tip which could come in handy today.)

Coincidence matches Bev Merritt's donation to ACHS

2013-11-27 - Louisville, KY - Photo by CM contributing photographer.
A very special moment happened the night of the KMEA State Marching Band Championship. To say Beverly (Bev) Merritt was a fan of the Adair County Band program is a huge understatement. Even though she didn't have children of her own. she considered every child who put on the Adair uniform one of her own. In honor of Bev her family was one of the sponsors of the KMEA Marching Band Plaques and it just so happened to be the second place Class 3A Plaque. Adair was fortunate to win second place and in turn win the trophy that Bev's family had her name on. We all know she was so proud to be able to give that award to the band she loved so deeply. Her sister Carol Edwards and aunt Violia Fergerson presented the trophy to Ashley Simpson the field commander of the Adair County Band. It may have not been first place that we have all wanted but I can assure you that Bev's family were brought to tears of joy to be able to be apart of that moment. - from CM Contributing Photographer
