(Ad) Epicurean Kentuckian: Knife skills a key to artistry, taste
2013-12-06 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by CM/EK advertising photo. At first glance, The julienned jalapenos on this catfish sandwich are pretty, but appear perilous to one used to the fiery bite the peppers can have. But they were just right. Chef Gary Crawford usually dices jalapenos, just to give a tiny bit of the peppers. The secret he said, is to match the size of the bits to the heat - the estimate of the Scovil units, with higher ratings getting tinier cubes. He does this by cutting off a tiny bit and doing a taste test. Everyone has experience buying a number of hot peppers and finding that some are as mild as sweet bell peppers, while others can cause pain and anguish. "The pods nearest the ground are always hottest," says, "but if you have a sack of pepper from one plant, the only way to tell the heat is to sample." The sandwich above is Chef Crawford's take on a deluxe catfish sandwich - lightly breaded filets, on toasted bun, with lettuce, sweet white onion, tomato, and the mandatory "Halloween" pepper. Of course, this designer sandwich costs a bit more and there's a wait - it's not a part of the "Get it Quick," fare TaP's is establishing for those with 30 minute lunch periods. - EK

Happy Tail: Ellie and her new dog Chief
2013-12-05 - Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, 860 Sparksville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Peg Schaeffer. Peg Shaeffer writes: I adopted out a dog named "Chief" today and received this photo and comments:
Hi Peg, I will send you a better picture soon with Ellie and Chief, but wanted to share this one with you. He had a bath and after his initial nervousness he settled down to take a nap. Ellie decided he needed a story read to him. (of course she can't read yet, but thought it was so sweet) She is already telling us she "loves him so much", and he is doing fine with our little dog Scooter. He will keep the name Chief, we think it's perfect for him. Will update you again with a little better photo. Thanks so much! - Jennifer, Barry and Ellie (Parker)
PS: I'll be selling GRAWL Quilt Raffle Tickets Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Christmas in the Courthouse, 9am-3pmCT, at the Historic Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY. See you there. I'll be upstairs. - Peg Schaeffer, Founder and CEO, Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, 860 Sparksville Road, Columbia, KY.

Christmas Lights 2014: Grimsley's Jewelry
2013-12-05 - 102 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by CM Staff. Christmas in the Courthouse, the brainchild of Columbia's master impresario, Charles Grimsley, has been a runaway success. At last count, 33 vendors will be at the event, 9am-3pmCT, Saturday, December 7, 2013. The event is staged by the Adair Heritage Association and Downtown boosters, and is coordinated as part of the December 6-7-8, 2013 "Christmas in Columbia" celebration. Christmas in the Courthouse has become a destination event in itself. Yet another Charles Grimsley idea, Christmas Caroling preceding the arrival of the Chamber sponsored Parade Under the Lights, this year with a theme "Storybook Christmas" has huge promise this year, with the combined choirs of the Columbia Christian Church and Trinity United Methodist under the direction of CCC music director Dwayne Martin. Above a poster for Christmas in the Courthouse and an angelic herald adorn the window of Grimsley's Jewelry at 102 Public Square.

Christmas Lights 2013: It Christmas time in the city
2013-12-05 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. There are plenty of Christmas Lights Downtown in anticipation of the official start of the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce Christmas in Columbia events, during which a gorgeously decorated tree, carrying out the same snowflake motif of the street decorations on Greensburg Street - like the one on the streetlight standard at right - will come alive with lights in the Fountain Plaza. The tree was furnished, put in place and anchored and decorated by the Columbia Christian Church. - LINDA
