Historic Casey County, KY - Lewis Alan Reed, horseman

2013-12-28 - Ellisburg, Casey Co., KY - Photo from the collection Alan W. Reed.
Lewis Alan Reed, my grandfather and noted horse lover.
This shot was taken long ago on our family farm located between Jacktown and Ellisburg in Casey County, KY, near the Casey/Lincoln/Marion County lines. The farm is now owned by Lester Griffin. A swinging bridge crossed Little South Fork of the Rolling Fork and connected the Reed farm and Rocky Ford School to county road 78 access. The mules were two of his favorite pulling horses. When the movie "Raintree County," was being filmed in Danville, KY, my grandfather provided the horses for the film (not this pair), and was well known at horse shows all through south central Kentucky. He wasn't exactly a 'horse whisperer,' but horses loved him, and he could train any horse easily. The barn still stands. It is now clad in sheet metal. - Alan W. Reed

Changing face of Russell Road: Little Building come full circle

2013-12-28 - 710 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The onetime Dairy Chick building, since a location for banks, will return to restaurant status once more, when a new Best Donuts breakfast house opens soon. Many oldtimers will remember when the late Warren Webb and the late J.D. Harper opened the Dairy Chick at this location, right beside Mr. Harper's Circle R restaurant. The Dairy Chick offered quick serve soft serve, hamburgers, fried chicken on its menu. (We'd love to post a photo). The new restaurant continues the restoration of Russell Road as major dining center. The Circle R, next door, is thriving today. Down the road are sites of the one time Hughes Motel Restaurant and banquet room. The street strip is also home to one of Betty Ollestad's original successes, a donut and breakfast shop. Best Donuts has a number of Kentucky locations, including one in Campbellsville, KY.

Hailey, multitasking

2013-12-28 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Pen. Like so many busy Americans Hailey had scant time to eat breakfast while catching up on work at her computer, a designer Minnie Mouse laptop, which goes with Christmas, her outfit, and the new pink rocker she took home for her room, the latter a gift from 'Regular' or 'Plain' Mema, Linda Waggener. - EW

Epicurean Kentuckian: Orange after zesting

2013-12-28 - Epicurean Kitchen - Photo by Pen. The outside rind of citrus fruits, particularly oranges and lemons provide flavorful oils which seem to make all the difference in some cakes and pies. Done carefully, the original fruit retains its appetizing appeal after the zest is removed.
