Epicurean Kentuckian: Potato Ball / Papa Rellenos
2014-01-19 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. They've been on the tv food shows, and now they're being made in Columbia. An interesting snack, Papas Rellenos or stuffed potatoes, are called simply "Potato Balls," in Florida where Chef Gary Crawford of TaP's became fond of the comfort food. Variations are as many as one has imagination. The softball sized one above was made with a ground beef, celery, onion, and jalapeno stuffing inside a casing of real mashed potatoes rolled in a very light cornmeal coating, then deep fried until golden brown. The entree is not on the menu - yet, but may be one day in the future. A Puerta Rican using pork is in a class of fried foods they call "Cuchifritos," according to the Wikipedia entry, Cuchifritos - EW

Surveillance camera catches shootout in progress
2014-01-19 - Downtown, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. Downtown Columbia Drama from a grainy CM video surveillance There was trouble in town Saturday as the leader of the Dalton Gang was hunting down "Hellca Stanley" (alias) for a banana pistol shootout. Nobody got hurt in the fracas. A witness, Bubba, commented of the gunman above. "He's a bad one, alright," adding, "but he's my brother." The Crawford Boys hang together, like brothers oughta. "Hellcat Stanley" had sneaked out the door, headed home, a bit tuckered from his two block shopping trip to the grocery store armory where he had purchased the "weapons," and exhausted from the frenzied shootout, perhaps to write a country song commemorating the showdown.
